This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly effective and empowered individual to join our leadership team, as Head of Learning Area (HoLA): Science. This position provides a unique opportunity to continue to build and develop a growing team, and we are therefore seeking applicants ideally with demonstrated leadership success.

As HOLA you should continue to build and develop the Science Learning Area, developing a culture of high-quality teaching and leadership. You should model innovative, solutions-focused, and evidence-based thinking. Working collaboratively with your Science team you will ideally implement whole school policies, processes, and procedures, embedding a culture of professional leadership, trust, and ongoing improvement for our students and staff.

The successful applicant should be a dedicated, highly competent, and enthusiastic HoLA, ideally with excellent interpersonal skills to provide effective and distributed leadership within the Learning Area. You should be committed to promoting and fostering academic aspiration and engagement, in an environment where achievement is celebrated. The HoLA Science should have an excellent understanding of data analysis and skills in evidence-based planning to improve student learning. They should have a commitment to improved results for all students, in a planned and strategic manner.  They will ideally utilise their high-level data literacy skills and monitoring processes to support all students. As an expert practitioner, you should ideally have a commitment to excellence in teaching and engage in ongoing self-reflection. The ability to authentically evaluate the effectiveness of teaching practice and team performance is an important aspect of the role. Another ideal attribute is the ability to create environments conducive to learning and provide educational opportunities that are purposeful and relevant, catering for different student learning needs.

Flexibility within a new school and a commitment to coaching and mentoring others will be highly desirable. As HoLA you should have evidence of high standards of professionalism and embrace opportunities for collaboration within the school community and across networks. You should support the development of innovative classroom practices and provide leadership to staff, utilising technology to provide authentic and relevant learning experiences for students.

About Us

Located in the northern suburb of Alkimos with sweeping ocean views, Alkimos College opened in 2020 with our foundation Year 7 cohort, providing local intake area students with access to an exceptional secondary education in world-class learning facilities. Each year we will add an additional cohort, until we reach our full complement of Year 7 -12 in 2025.

Stage 1 buildings include administration, student services, library, gymnasium, fitness centre, food studios, cafeteria, technologies, general classrooms, nine specialist science laboratories and nature play area. Shared oval and community facilities with the City of Wanneroo are available via the adjacent Halesworth Park precinct. Stage 2 (being roll-out during 2024) includes a purpose-built performing arts centre, dance studio, media classrooms, music classrooms, visual arts studios, lecture theatre, senior school student services, two additional double storey Learning Area blocks and a new autism centre.

The College places a high priority on professional learning, with a focus on a whole of college instructional framework as part of our ‘Alkimos Approach.’ A commitment to self-reflection and growth is highly desirable. The College uses a coaching framework for all planning, review, performance development and classroom observation and feedback. Our staff embrace technology and innovation and enhance their skills with technology to improve work practices. The College provides students with a range of devices available to suit the learning required. Alkimos College has high expectations of the student cohort to ensure all students are well prepared for their future, and have the opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to achieve their potential. This is complemented by a strong focus on student engagement and mental health and wellbeing, through our bespoke Anchor Program. Alkimos College has a Department endorsed Specialised Autism Learning Program and a Gifted and Talented Academic Selective Entrance Program. In addition, we have an academic extension pathway and a Learning Support pathway in Years 7-10 for MESH. In the Science Learning Area in Year 11 we are currently offering ATAR Biology, Human Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Studies, and Psychology. In the general pathway we are offering Human Biology and Science in Practice.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings.
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes.
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

 Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment.
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
