Job description

  • Oversee the Incinerator Gallery, leading the team to plan, develop & deliver a program of high-quality exhibitions.

The Head of Visual and Public Art reports to the Manager Arts Culture and Place and is responsible for all Public Art Projects within the municipality, leading a cross-functional team and developing productive relationships with local artists and local arts organisations. This position also oversees operations at Incinerator Gallery, leading the team to plan, develop and deliver an annual program of high-quality exhibitions and related activities that drive attendance at the gallery and community engagement with visual art.
  
Key responsibilities and duties will be to;
  • Work with Head of Performing Arts and Asset Development and Head of Festivals and Events to realise the ambitions expressed in Igniting Creativity.
  • Lead the creation of a new cross-functional team, to engage with community and increase the visibility of the arts in the municipality, outside of Council-owned assets.
  • Develop an effective team at Incinerator Gallery.
  • Lead the development and implementation of suitable measures to reflect the value of the investment in the arts.
  • Draw on your expertise to provide advice and recommendations in all aspects of Visual and Public art.
  • Lead innovative and continuous improvement processes in the management and administration of Incinerator Gallery venue capital works, operations and programming
  • Participate in industry forums, advisory committees and represent at internal and external meetings and networks.
  • Produce service planning, prepare reports, develop budgets, establish annual workplans and provide quarterly and annual reports.
  • Responsibility for capital renewal budgets and programs for public art maintenance.
  • Oversee and lead public art projects.
  • Prepare proposals, business cases and apply for grants.
  • Increase utilisation of creative spaces across the municipality, prioritising spaces for local and emerging artists or creatives.
  • Oversee the maintenance of existing Art Collection ensuring that valuations, audits, conservation and repairs of works. Enhance communication, team building and efficiencies between the different artforms and functions.
  • Provide leadership and support in the day-to-day operations of Incinerator Gallery,
  • Oversee the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive reporting systems and provide regular reports.
  • Oversee and/or directly manage tenders and contracts associated with the asset.
  • Ensure the Incinerator Gallery operational budgets are managed effectively.
  • Liaise with and support marketing staff in the development of marketing and communications plans.
  • Supervise and support staff and ensure annual staff performance plans and reviews are undertaken and training provided.
  • Develop and implement changes in operations to drive attendance.
  • Work with the team to develop, plan and deliver a dynamic program of high quality exhibitions.
  • Build effective and productive relationships with professional artists, arts bodies and art groups.
  • Collaborate with relevant arts officers to coordinate a dynamic program of activities that complements Incinerator’s core exhibition program and drives attendance.
The ideal candidate will have proven capabilities in leading and developing staff in a change management environment as well as experience in planning, development, curation and installation of Visual arts exhibitions and/or public art programs. Demonstrated experience in building new audiences, engaging with the community, and working with artists and experience in developing, managing and reporting on operational and capital budgets is essential. Tertiary qualifications in Visual/Fine Arts, Curatorial/Museum Studies, Arts Management, with several years of relevant experience in managing arts projects and/or managing an arts venue preferred.
