This role is 16 hours per week, with flexibility around the days.
About Reflections
On average, one person dies every 12 hours in Australia from the terminal, asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma, and an estimated 4000 per year from the effects of asbestos.
Established in 2015, Reflections (www.reflections.org.au) is a not-for-profit organisation tasked with reducing the impact of asbestos on the community through SUPPORT and AWARENESS.
Reflections offers a holistic, whole journey approach in providing support, advocacy and reliable information for those diagnosed with an Asbestos Disease, particularly Mesothelioma.
About the Role
Working alongside the Support Coordinator, non-clinical team members and our volunteers,
You will primarily be conversing with people who have been diagnosed and or bereaved by Mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases. Providing support, advocacy and information to help navigate their unique experience.
Role responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- Receiving and reviewing new client contacts/referrals
- Establishing therapeutic rapport and connection with clients, carers and families
- As part of the team, develop and participate in educational forums
- Helping guide difficult conversations and provision of resources for new sufferers to help guide the mesothelioma journey
- Developing and maintaining relationships with medical specialists, stakeholders, affiliates, and resource providers as needed
- Maintaining an awareness of what is happening in the asbestos support space
- Flexibility to travel interstate to meet with clients as required.
About You
Ideally, you will be a dynamic, empathetic individual, with excellent communication and advocacy skills.
An experienced Health Professional, confident to deliver non-clinical support to individuals, families and caregivers.
Previous experience facilitating support groups and/or professional /personal experience with asbestos-related or terminal diseases would be highly regarded.
Other strengths would include:
- Current professional qualifications in nursing, social work or an allied health profession
- Ability to communicate and engage with vulnerable individuals compassionately and advocate on their behalf where needed
- Experience in the documentation and storage of confidential records accurately and legibly
- Previous experience in setting and achieving goals, tasks, and objectives in a timely manner
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team whilst maintaining a client centred approach
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite and current communication software
- Current C Class driver’s license – use of your car may occasionally be required. (travel allowance paid.)
