Position Title:             Health Safety and Environment Officer

Reports to:                 Operations Manager

As Health Safety and Environment Officer you will play a pivotal role in the assessment, implementation, improvement, and monitoring of safety practices for our rapidly expanding carbon farming projects. 

The ideal candidate will be passionate about environmental conservation, with a strong commitment to ensuring the health and safety of our project teams and the lands we restore. This role involves some fieldwork, requiring a proactive approach to safety management, environmental protection, and compliance with regulatory standards.

Role will include some travel to the Wheatbelt and South West Region of Western Australia.  Some working away from home will be required.

Where you fit in

Nativ Carbon works with companies and organisations who wish to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU's) through vegetation farming in the West Australian Wheatbelt.

Nativ Carbon is committed to working with stakeholders to increase carbon sequestration in vegetation and soil to reduce Australia's net carbon emissions.

As Health Safety and Environment Officer you will support the operations team to ensure the efficient and safe delivery of Nativ Carbon's offset vegetation farming projects.  Your expertise and guidance will be crucial in achieving the organisations goals whilst maintaining high safety standards across our projects.

This is a hands-on role addressing the health, safety and environmental challenges through the stages of each project.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures for all the companies carbon farming activities.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental and safety regulations.
  • Design and deliver training programs on safety practices, emergency response, and environmental awareness for project staff, contractors, and volunteers.
  • Coordinate with project managers and field teams to integrate HSE best practices into daily operations and project planning.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses, reporting findings and recommending improvements to prevent future occurrences.
  • Promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility within the organization and among project participants.
  • Review and audit Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Risk Assessments, fostering employee awareness and compliance.
  • Develop and coordinate Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality Management Systems to enhance business performance and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Offer expert advice and support on Health & Safety compliance within a risk management framework to meet contractual and regulatory obligations.
  • Conduct coaching and mentoring to improve performance and ensure compliance among workgroups.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or Certification in Health and Safety, Risk Management, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in an HSE role, preferably in agriculture, forestry, reforestation, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and safety standards applicable to reforestation projects.
  • Professional certification in health and safety
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and navigate rugged terrain.
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Willingness to travel to various project sites as required.
  • Ability to write and compile Health & Safety procedures.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Great interpersonal skills, including liaison with major clients.
  • Excellent written skills, with the ability to prepare and deliver training materials.
  • Strong self-management skills.
  • Strategic thinker with excellent problem-solving and negotiation skills.
  • Self-motivated, results-driven, and able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Experience working in a cross-cultural environment with the cultural context when working with Aboriginal or other Indigenous peoples.
  • Demonstrated competence in written and oral communication skills, highly organised with attention to detail and the ability to use Microsoft Office programs in the preparation of reports.

Salary: We believe in rewarding people based on their performance and value to the company. An attractive salary package will be negotiated based on experience and skill set including a company vehicle.

Salary range: $80,000 - $95,000pa pro rata plus superannuation

This is a part time role for 4 days/30 hours per week, with transition to a full-time role considered for the right candidate.  Position will be offered as a 12-month contract initially. A 3-month probationary period is applicable.

Commencement:  Successful candidate to start in May 2024
