Position objectives
As the HSEQ Advisor at Kangaroo Island Council, your mission is to lead and champion a culture of Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality excellence. Through strategic planning, risk management, and continuous improvement initiatives, you will ensure the well-being of our employees, community, and environment. Your commitment to upholding the highest standards in health, safety, environmental stewardship, and quality assurance will play a pivotal role in advancing our organisation’s mission and values. Make no mistake, this is a 'hands-on' role. You will be both on-site and in-office, playing an active role in educating, training, mentoring and leading our staff in safety, across all areas of the organisation.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive HSEQ strategies, policies, and procedures aligned with organisational goals
- Lead risk management initiatives and ensure compliance with relevant health, safety, environmental, and quality standards
- Conduct regular audits and inspections to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions
- Foster a safety-conscious culture through effective communication, training, and engagement with employees and stakeholders
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and hazards, providing recommendations to prevent re-occurrence
Skills and Experience
- Proven experience in a senior HSEQ role
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven leadership capabilities, inspiring a team towards a culture of continuous improvement
- Minimum of 5 years relevant experience in senior WHS / HSEQ roles, achieving measurable improvements
- Experience within local government and a familiarity with regulations and best practices, including the Risk Services Platform
- A comprehensive understanding of Compliance & Legislation and Auditing & Reporting requirements within South Australia
- Knowledge of Skytrust WHS Management software and Synergy
- High level of competency in MS Office suite
Qualifications and Selection Criteria
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, or related field, OR
- Diploma of Work, Health Safety highly desirable
- Valid Australian Drivers Licence
- White Card
- First Aid Certification
- National Police Clearance
