Job description

An excellent opportunity is available for a Human Ethics Officer and Committee Convenor to join the Governance, Risk and Compliance department at Australia's pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the Position
Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) play a central role in the Australian system of ethical oversight of human research. HRECs review proposals for research involving human participants to ensure that they are ethically acceptable and in accordance with relevant standards and guidelines. The Human Ethics and Governance Officer and Committee Convener is responsible for the operation of the WEHI HREC and for contributing to the broader functions of the Governance, Risk and Compliance team.

Selection Criteria
Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of human research ethics and the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2023).
  • Excellent understanding of the ethical and governance regulations applicable in a medical research environment.
  • Degree in biomedical sciences, ethics or other relevant qualification.
  • Research experience in a hospital or biomedical research environment is highly desirable.
  • High standard of written and verbal communication.
  • Capacity to adapt to new systems and procedures.

Personal Qualities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Conscientious.
  • Reliable and well organised.
  • Experience with Sharepoint and Microsoft 365 software highly desirable.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to act with discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Terms of Appointment
This position is an ongoing role in a full time capacity. Salary is Professional Services Employee Level 6 ($88,811 - $96,133). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
