About the Role
As part of the BHP Iron Ore Network Operator, the High Voltage (HV) & Power Operations team is responsible for the Operation of our HV transmission and distribution network across the Pilbara.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic team responsible for providing overarching control of the Inland HV network. This function is integral to all aspects of network planning, execution, maintenance and operation of the Inland Network.
Our Network Controllers are responsible for ensuring the HV transmission and distribution networks are operated within design parameters and play a key role in contributing to create a safe and controlled work environment for BHP employees and members of the public exposed to the network.
Your role will also be critical in the integration of renewable energy sources into the network over the next few years as WAIO works towards its decarbonisation goals, which will be both challenging and exciting.
Reporting to the Lead Network Operations, the primary focus of this role is to:

  • Actively monitor the network and escalate faults.
  • Respond to power outages, identifying fault cause, isolating the area if required and remotely restoring power to the network.
  • Ensure network is operated within acceptable design parameters and operating procedures
  • Review and approve high voltage switching programs.
  • Oversee switching activities and perform remote switching in accordance with high voltage switching programs
  • Provide technical support to team members in the field
  • Analyse faults and operational performance to identify opportunities for improvement or areas of concern and work collaboratively with stakeholders to implement solutions
  • Provide operational support to Planning and Projects teams to co-ordinate access to the network for maintenance or Project implementation
About You
To be successful in this key position, you will possess sound knowledge in power systems operations combined with SCADA experience. In addition to technical capability, you will also possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to problem solve and manage unplanned situations in a calm and methodical manner.
In addition, we are ideally looking for the following skills and experience:
  • Network Controller, Electrical Trade or Electrical Engineering background with previous experience in an Electrical Utility, Mining or related industry
  • Understanding of standards and regulations related to Network Operators
  • High Voltage switching and experience writing high voltage switching programs
  • Network load flow analysis experience utilising software such as PowerFactory
  • Operation of renewable technologies
  • Ability to engage collaboratively with key stakeholders at all levels
  • Advanced Microsoft skills
  • Solution focused with a passion for mentoring and coaching others
Location
This role will be offered as a FIFO based role from Perth on 7 days on 7 days off roster.
