The Client

With an office in Cairns, our client is a registered Native Title Body Corporate holding interests for first nations people located in Cape York Peninsula. These interests include connections for a large expanse of land including mainland, coastal and offshore islands in addition to sea country within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and Coral Sea. The Opportunity

As the IPA Coordinator, you will be responsible for coordinating the finalisation and implementation of our clients Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) Management Plan. The IPA plan is being developed through extensive consultations with Elders and Traditional Owners and is a key strategic document setting out the aspirations for land and sea country and its ongoing management in Cape York Peninsula.

In this role, you will work to develop and maintain networks with Elders, Traditional Owners, government and non-government organisations, scientists and businesses. You will apply for, manage, evaluate and report on grants to enable implementation of the IPA Plan. This will include the development and use of Country and Culture Information Management Systems as part of monitoring, evaluating, reporting and improving the IPA plan. Working with key internal stakeholders, the IPA Coordinator will contribute to the overall management and implementation of the Land and Sea Management program.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will require:

  • Knowledge and experience in Indigenous Protected Area planning and implementation or similar Aboriginal country-based planning processes including the ability to communicate empathetically and effectively with Elders, Directors and Traditional Owners.
  • Demonstrated project leadership, management and organisational skills, including ability to write grants, manage budgets, work plans, contracts, reporting and consultation processes.
  • A working knowledge of relevant legislation including the Native Title Act, Aboriginal Land Act (Qld), Nature Conservation Act (Qld), Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act and related statutory agreements including Indigenous Management Agreements and Traditional Use of Marine Resource Agreements or an ability to acquire that knowledge.
  • An ability to develop and maintain networks with partner agencies and non-government organisations to support implementation of the IPA Management Plan.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, including computer skills, such as word processing, email, databases, internet and spreadsheets preferably within a Microsoft environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain networks with Traditional Owners, key partner agencies and stakeholders and act as a key liaison point for Traditional Owners and partners exhibiting exceptional communication skills, information processing and summary reporting.
  • High level of written and oral communication skills, such as ability to produce reports and deliver presentations.
  • Experience and proven capability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • An understanding of historical and current issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, particularly in northern Australia and the Torres Strait and the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Traditional Owners and their Elders.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Manual driver's licence.
  • Tertiary qualification with substantial experience in land management and conservation.
  • Eligible to successfully apply for a Blue Card for Working with Children.

Highly Desirable:

  • Previous experience collaborating with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and their leaders while honouring traditional culture, values, and business practices.
