Job description

Do you want to make a positive impact in your community and work towards better outcomes for Indigenous students and families? We are actively seeking applications from passionate and dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to join our team in the Indigenous Education and Research Centre (IERC) at James Cook University (JCU). This role allows you to provide high-quality pastoral care and support to help Indigenous students overcome personal challenges and ensures a positive student experience throughout their educational journey.

  • This position is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants
  • Full-time, fixed term to December 2024
  • Based in Townsville at the JCU campus in Douglas
  • $83,115 - $90,022 per annum plus up to 17% superannuation
  • Interested candidates are encouraged to read the application instructions carefully, as there are important details to address as part of your application.

ABOUT THE ROLE
Building connections and trusting relationships with Indigenous students is at the heart of this role. As the key contact throughout their studies, you will assist students with their well-being and support needs by providing ongoing guidance and advice to feel valued throughout their educational journey. This is a rewarding role where you’ll get real job satisfaction by influencing and guiding our students to become motivated and independent learners. The IERC has a strong team approach to inspire Indigenous students to progress and persist with their studies to see them successfully graduate. You’ll assist in the planning and delivery of pre-study programs, offer advice on pathways into university study, and provide information on financial assistance and other support services available.

ABOUT YOU
Only applicants who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander will be considered for this role. Having completed a university degree yourself, you bring a solid understanding of the challenges faced by Indigenous students in higher education and the essential academic skills and healthy learning habits necessary for them to overcome these challenges. Proficient writing and communication skills are essential for confidential record-keeping and case planning. You should be able to use a range of computer programs including the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) with confidence and demonstrate the ability to learn new systems easily. You work well on your own as well as when collaborating with others and thrive in a fast-paced team environment by using effective organisation, time management and problem-solving skills. You’ll also need to have a current Working with Children Blue Card (or be able to obtain one rapidly) and be willing to undertake occasional travel within the state as required.
