Job description

Join our team as an Indigenous Student Support Advisor at James Cook University (JCU) and make a significant impact on the lives of Indigenous students! We are seeking a passionate and dedicated individual who can provide high-quality pastoral care and support to help our students overcome personal challenges and ensure a positive student experience throughout their educational journey.

  • Full-time, fixed term to December 2024
  • Based at the Townsville Bebegu Yumba campus
  • HEWL 6: $83,115 - $90,022 per annum plus up to 17% superannuation
  • This is a designated position for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
WHAT YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH IN THE ROLE

As an Indigenous Student Support Advisor, you will be responsible for ensuring that our Indigenous students achieve positive academic progression rates and successfully complete their studies. By delivering expert pastoral and personal support services and programs, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing the preparedness and capacity of our students. This includes assisting in the planning and delivery of pre-study programs, offering informed advice on enrolment pathways, and providing guidance on financial and other assistance available from both the University and government sources. Building strong and trusting relationships with our students is at the heart of this role. As their key contact for support throughout their studies, you will identify their individual well-being and support needs, enabling early intervention when necessary. Your dedication and commitment will ensure our students feel valued and supported on their educational journey.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE

To succeed in this role, you should hold a degree qualification in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education and/or training. A demonstrated understanding of the challenges Indigenous students face in higher education is crucial, along with detailed knowledge of Higher Education policies, legislation, and degree program prerequisites. Proficiency in data analytics, administration, and various learning technologies, including the Microsoft Office Suite, is essential. Additionally, you should possess the ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, contributing to the achievement of strategic outcomes. Strong organisational, problem-solving, and case management skills, along with excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, are also key requirements. We also require the successful candidate to possess a current Working with Children Blue Card, as well as be willing to undertake occasional intrastate travel as required.
