Inspector - Health & Safety

  • $106,978 per annum plus super / ongoing opportunities

About the role

WorkSafe's Health & Safety Business Unit (HSBU) plays an integral role in upholding WorkSafe's vision of Victorian workers returning home safely every day. As a WorkSafe Inspector, you will have a vital role in ensuring that workplaces meet their Health and Safety obligations across a wide range of industries which may include Health Care, Disability, Aged Care & Social Support Services, Construction, Agriculture, Manufacturing and Transport.

You will assist and advise employers, supervisors and workers on how to make workplaces safe and undertake enforcement action to ensure compliance with health and safety laws. You will also assist Health and Safety Representatives in their role of representing workers on Occupational Health and Safety issues.

You will spend a large part of your time visiting and inspecting workplaces. During an inspection, you will gauge the level of compliance with legislative requirements and take appropriate action, which may range from the provision of information to the imposing of enforcement measures.

You may need to make timely decisions regarding next steps and interventions and this may be in an emergency or at-risk situation. On successful completion of a comprehensive and supportive training program, you will be appointed as an Inspector under the Health and Safety legislation administered by WorkSafe, the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Equipment (Public Safety) EPS Acts. As part of your role, you will:

  • Inspect workplaces to ensure compliance with OH&S legislation;
  • Provide advice to Duty Holders and enforce OH&S legislation;
  • Drive safety and the prevention of disease and injury in Victorian workplaces.

About you

Ideally, you will be able to demonstrate the below attributes, skills and experiences;

  • Highly developed critical thinking, influencing, negotiation and conflict resolution skills;
  • A system thinking approach through experience and/or application
  • Computer skills and capability to use Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Strong writing skills or demonstrated ability to be able to read, interpret, apply legislation or technical standards in a regulatory capacity and an ability to write reports;
  • Ability to assess and investigate situations quickly and efficiently;
  • Qualifications in OH&S/Workers Compensation or safety management experience (desirable).
  • Hold a current Australian driver's licence;

Recruitment Process

Potential candidates must ensure they are available for all key dates as we may not be able to accommodate individual requests.

You will be required to undergo a National Police Check, Psychometric Testing and Medical Assessment as part of the recruitment process. The role of an inspector can be physically demanding, so we need to ensure you can perform the inherent requirements of the position safely without putting yourself or others at risk. As an applicant, WorkSafe will require that you undergo a pre-employment medical examination by an external GP who will assess your current health as well as your medical and surgical history. Applicants are also required to meet the standards of medical fitness for an inspector and complete a drug screen.
