What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Band 3 & 4 Intelligence Officer.

AFP Intelligence Operations are seeking people who are passionate about intelligence analysis and want to make a real difference to Australia’s national security and criminal environment. Intelligence Operations is one of many functions which contribute to the AFP's domestic and international capability and is integral to AFP investigations, national intelligence priorities and AFP corporate objectives.

AFP Intelligence Operations are seeking individuals who are self-directed and have the flexibility and resilience to thrive in a dynamic, high tempo working environment. Using well developed critical thinking and analytical skills you will work as a member of an intelligence team to identify and mitigate threats. You will contribute to AFP investigations by working with others, to provide a consolidated picture of transnational serious organised crime and national security threats, identifying priorities, and informing decision making.

You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

 You will be part of a team of intelligence professionals who contribute to complex criminal investigations, national intelligence priorities and corporate objectives. Working with Criminal Intelligence Analysts, investigators and other specialists, you will apply contemporary intelligence and analytical tools, to collect, collate and analyse information, to produce actionable intelligence which influences organisational decision-making at all levels. 

As a Band 3 Intelligence Officer you will apply your experience and skills to:

  • Plan, collect, collate and analyse information to produce and disseminate actionable intelligence, under supervision.
  • Work collaboratively within the immediate team environment, as well as with other AFP members and partner agencies including the broader intelligence community.
  • Brief intelligence consumers both written and orally, informally, and formally.
  • Provide tactical and operational intelligence support to senior Intelligence Officers and Criminal Intelligence Analysts.
  • Undertake intelligence and information management and administrative tasks.
  • Identify and interpret information and data obtained in an ethical manner, which is used to inform assessments and reach conclusions to meet a specified user requirement.
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of the intelligence environment and relevant Commonwealth legislation.

As a Band 4 Intelligence Officer you will apply your experience and skills to:

  • Proactively plan, collect, collate and analyse information to produce and disseminate actionable intelligence.
  • Work collaboratively within the immediate team environment, as well as with other AFP members and partner agencies including broader intelligence community.
  • Collect, triage and assess information of intelligence value during police operations.
  • Provide high level written and oral intelligence briefs to intelligence consumers.
  • Record information and intelligence appropriately.
  • Identify and interpret information and data obtained in an ethical manner which is used to inform assessments and reach conclusions to meet a specified user requirement.
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of the intelligence environment and relevant Commonwealth legislation.

Essential Requirements

 Band 3 & 4

  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one. Higher classification may be required dependent on work area. 
  • Contemporary knowledge and/or a sound understanding of the role of intelligence in law enforcement.
  • Formal tertiary or vocational qualifications.

 Band 4

  • Minimum 3 years experience in intelligence, policing, criminology, criminal justice, or analytical/research field.

Desirable Requirements

 Band 3

  • Relevant qualification or extensive experience and knowledge of intelligence analysis.

 Band 4

  • Contemporary experience in law enforcement or national security intelligence analysis.
  • Experience working in joint agency operational environment.

Additional Information

  •  These roles are AFP Band level 3 or 4.
  • Please indicate what locations for which you wish to be considered.
  • Some positions may require the completion of a psychological assessment. 
  • In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement 2017- 2020, an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their Base Salary which will count as salary for superannuation. The Commissioner has the authority to remove a composite from a role.
  • Proof of a minimum of two COVID-19 vaccinations (or one dose if the Janssen vaccine was used) will be required if an offer of employment is made.
