The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) is an independent statutory office established by the Fair Work Act 2009. Our functions outline the responsibilities we have as set by the Fair Work Act 2009 to achieve our purpose:

  • provide education, assistance, advice and guidance to employers, employees, outworkers, outworker entities and organisations
  • provide and monitor compliance with workplace laws
  • inquire into and investigate breaches of the Fair Work Act
  • take appropriate enforcement action
  • perform our statutory functions efficiently, effectively, economically and ethically.

Eligibility:

  • To be eligible for employment with the FWO you must be an Australian citizen. 
  • The successful candidate must hold a current Australian Government Security Clearance (AGSVA) or be willing to undergo and obtain a Baseline security clearance. 
  • Subject to the public health advice in place from time to time, the successful candidate will be required to attend the FWO offices regularly and, depending on the role, be required to attend other locations. In accordance with this requirement and the FWO’s work health and safety obligations, employees generally must be vaccinated against COVID-19, and provide satisfactory evidence of vaccination status.

About the team:

The Large Corporates Branch is part of the Compliance and Enforcement Group and is responsible for undertaking targeted compliance monitoring and complex investigations leading to appropriate compliance and enforcement outcomes in matters involving large corporate entities. We are a multi-disciplinary team comprising staff with investigation, legal and subject matter expertise, and data analysts. We embrace diverse experience, a forensic mindset and people who enjoy working closely with internal and external stakeholders, including legal providers and other vendors.

Typical Duties: 

The duties of this role include, however, are not limited to:

  • Undertake compliance and investigative activities within a team and project framework.  This can include discrete tasks or responsibility for a specific area or aspect of an investigation
  • Contribute to investigation planning and inquiries, and analysing large amounts of documents and information including with the assistance of technology assisted review software
  • Work with a team of experts in various disciplines and external providers to deliver strategically aligned and efficient compliance and enforcement outcomes
  • Distil complex information to succinctly articulate issues and recommendations to support decision makers and inform investigation strategy
  • Prepare project plans, briefs and reports
  • Under supervision, exercise compliance powers.
     

What we are looking for:

We are looking for Investigators at the APS 5 or 6 level to undertake the day to day conduct, under direction and supervision, of large and complex investigations into potential non-compliance and assurance processes involving large corporate entities. This position suits people with an analytical and inquisitive mindset and high level problem solving skills, who are comfortable working with large volumes of complex information in a changing environment.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • tertiary qualifications in law, workplace relations, and/or investigations; and/or
  • experience conducting or responding to large or complex regulatory investigations; and/or
  • professional services experience in areas such as payroll compliance, wage remediation programs and/or workplace relations compliance.


Knowledge and/or professional experience in the Fair Work Act 2009 and the Australian workplace relations system is desirable. 

In completing your application, you should also be mindful of the Integrated Leadership System (ILS) and the capabilities required to be successful at the APS 5 or APS 6 level. The FWO has advertised these roles across classification levels in order to attract the right people for the right jobs.  As part of the recruitment process, you will be assessed against the relevant classification levels using the ILS, and candidates will be appointed to levels according to their skills, knowledge and experience. Selection Criteria

To be successful in one of these roles you require:

  • Demonstrated experience undertaking work that requires attention to detail, analytical and problem solving skills, including the ability to objectively assess information or evidence and draw accurate conclusions, and communicate recommendations to support evidence-based decision-making
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to succinctly articulate complex information
  • Skills in interpreting and applying industrial instruments and legislation, or comparable experience applying regulatory frameworks and/or interpreting statutory instruments
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, and with a variety of external providers and other stakeholders
  • Aptitude to use, or to develop skills to use, technology to assist with analysis of data, information and documentation to identify non-compliance with workplace laws.
