About the Role
The IT Network / Cloud Engineer is responsible for designing and maintaining Whitehaven Coal's network infrastructure and cloud environment to ensure its reliability, security and performance. With one eye on day to day operations the role will also need to be considering long term implications and align with IT and business strategies associated with growth in both IT and OT. This role will work closely with multiple Managed Services providers to ensure their responsibilities in implementing and supporting changes meet design, quality and operational service levels.
This is a Sydney CBD based role and occasional site visits and travel to Brisbane, Newcastle and our regional mine sites will be required, as part of managing key relationships and projects.
What You'll Do
Network Design and Planning:
Develop network architecture blueprints and plans, including LAN, WAN, data centre, and cloud-based networks
Assess current network infrastructure and identify areas for improvement
Design, with Services providers scalable, reliable, and high-performance network solutions
Evaluate emerging technologies and make recommendations for network improvements
Network Implementation:
Lead network infrastructure projects, including hardware and software deployments, upgrades, and migrations
Configure and deploy network hardware, including routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers
Set up and manage virtual private networks (VPNs) and remote access solutions
Ensure proper network segmentation and VLAN configurations (Core IT and OT networks)
Security and Compliance:
Implement and maintain security measures, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and encryption protocols
Monitor network traffic for security threats and vulnerabilities
Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA)
Performance Optimization:
Continuously monitor network performance and troubleshoot issues
Optimize network resources for maximum efficiency and throughput
Implement Quality of Service (QoS) policies to prioritize critical traffic
Documentation:
Maintain detailed network documentation, including diagrams, configurations, and change logs
Create and update network policies and procedures
Vendor Management:
Evaluate and select network equipment vendors and service providers
Negotiate contracts and manage vendor relationships
Collaboration and Communication:
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand their networking needs
Communicate technical information effectively to non-technical stakeholders
Capacity Planning:
Forecast network growth and plan for scalability
Recommend hardware and software upgrades as needed
Disaster Recovery and Redundancy:
Design and implement network redundancy and failover solutions
Develop and test disaster recovery plans
What You'll Bring
Proven experience as a Network / Cloud Engineer
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (Master's degree preferred)
Familiarity with cloud networking solutions (e.g., Azure, AWS, Google Cloud)
In-depth knowledge of network protocols, routing, switching, SDWAN and security technologies
Strong understanding of network monitoring and management tools
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
Project management skills and the ability to work in a team
5 plus years of relevant experience in network design and architecture
Knowledge of Industrial Control Systems
Industry certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, or equivalent
Microsoft certifications in the Azure landscape
Knowledge or certification in Service Management frameworks such as ITIL
