You will assist clients charged with summary crimes to achieve timely and appropriate outcomes by targeting finite resources to a range of interventions based on need, and by influencing the criminal justice system to be efficient, fair and respectful to accused people.
You will appear in the Magistrates' Court of Victoria and other courts and tribunals, including busy duty lawyer lists primarily in criminal law and associated family violence matters.
You will deliver high quality legal services by providing legal information and advice, conducting casework, and working with our community partners with appropriate referrals to ensure clients receive a holistic service.
In addition to the above responsibilities, our Senior Lawyers provide legal supervision, mentoring, training, and contribute to the professional development of less experienced lawyers and assist in the development of strategies to improve access to justice, including representing VLA in consultations and working groups.
We have two full time ongoing roles available:
- 1x Lawyer (VLA3)
- 1x Senior Lawyer (VLA4)
- Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in providing quality legal services with a focus on the criminal law jurisdiction, including sound knowledge of criminal law procedures
- Strong advocacy experience representing clients with diverse and complex needs and the ability to identify client's needs beyond their immediate legal issue
- Stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to positively engage with key partner agencies and/or their workers to appropriately manage referrals and to promote services within community settings
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and your demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively with others and fostering a supportive team environment
- Ability to supervise legal work and to mentor and train staff and contribute to the development of individuals and their knowledge and skills in criminal law (Senior Lawyer role only)
