The Role
Our client is seeking a talented and motivated Lead Engineer to join their growing team. You'll be responsible for leading the design, development, and validation of a range of consumer products with a focus on load bearing, ruggedised components. This role offers the chance to leverage your expertise in mechanical engineering to manage a team, ensure projects meet technical and commercial requirements, and contribute to the company's continued success. You will:

• Lead development of enhancement components following established processes
• Design & create components using various manufacturing methods
• Manage & mentor a mechanical engineering team, keeping projects on track
• Review designs, specs & tolerances for assigned projects
• Collaborate with Engineering & Design team and product managers to ensure products meet requirements
• Work seamlessly with operations & supply chain throughout new product development
• Lead DFM/DFQ initiatives across departments, optimising performance & user experience
• Lead test fitments, failure testing & validation to ensure products meet regulatory standards and quality specifications
• Guide & support direct reports and other team members
• Work with product management to establish project timelines for engineering & validation
• Collaborate on technical writing to enhance the user experience
• Provide occasional technical support for business training activities
• Manage project resources & budgets, overseeing costs and commercial considerations with the product manager

Competencies:

• A strong engineering background with experience in designing functional mechanical systems is essential
• Confidence designing load bearing and ruggedised components and assemblies
• In-depth understanding of part design using various manufacturing processes
• A proven track record of leading a team and managing multiple projects.
• Demonstrated experience with NPD (New Product Development), design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA)
• Proficient in SolidWorks CAD software
• Experienced with analysis techniques (FEA/Ansys)
• Excellent mechanical aptitude and hands on approach to work
• Strong time management, planning and troubleshooting skills
• Effective communication skills with inter-disciplinary teams, suppliers and vendors
• Demonstrated commitment to regulatory, quality and safety standards
• Understanding of IP & Patents

  
Qualifications and experience:

• A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field
• Proven experience as a Senior Mechanical Engineer, Lead Engineer, or similar role
• 8+ years of experience in a mechanical engineering role
• Experience in planning and scheduling work
• Experience with design for manufacture for various processes, including injection moulding, metal components, and extrusions
• Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD software
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a keen eye for detail
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to thrive in a cross-functional team environment
• A commitment to ensuring the highest quality and safety standards in product design
• Understanding of intellectual property (IP) & patents and how to interpret claims
