About the opportunity

The School of Physics at the University of Sydney is currently seeking applications from exceptional candidates for two Lecturers / Senior Lecturersin Physicsto meet school's Teaching and Research strategic objectives in theoretical quantum physics and theoretical optics and photonics. The two positions are outlined below.

Position 1 - Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in theoretical quantum physics

The successful applicant will establish a new research program in theoretical quantum science on topics that align with and complement the research directions currently pursued by the Quantum Science research group at Sydney, and in particular the Quantum Theory Group led by Professors Stephen Bartlett and Andrew Doherty.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • contribute to outstanding Teaching and learning in Physics
  • demonstrate research excellence, develop a program of original research either independently or as part of a team, and pursue external funding to support this research
  • develop research collaborations within Australia and internationally, with other universities and industry
  • participate in research student supervision at the undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • develop your profile through conferences and contributing to the research community
  • contribute to a positive, supportive and inclusive research environment within the Quantum Science Research Group and the wider School
  • contribute to engagement and service/administrative activities of the School of Physics and Faculty of Science
  • contribute to and help shape the strategic goals of School and Faculty.

Position 2 - Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in theoretical optics and photonics

The successful applicant will establish a research program in theoretical optics and photonics. The focus will be either fundamental or applied aspects of frequency combs that fit within the research envelope of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS). This includes nonlinear optics, spectroscopy and microscopy, information and intelligence, sensing and measurement and astronomical applications of frequency combs.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • contribute to outstanding Teaching and learning in Physics
  • demonstrate research excellence, develop a program of original research either independently or as part of a team, and pursue external funding to support this research
  • develop and maintain collaboration within the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS)
  • participate in research student supervision at the undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • develop external research partnerships and engagement
  • contribute to engagement and service/administrative activities of the School of Physics and Faculty of Science
  • contribute to and help shape the strategic goals of School and Faculty and of COMBS.

About you

  • a PhD or other research doctorate in a relevant field
  • a strong track record of research in quantum information theory or theoretical optics and photonics

  • a capability to see the bigger picture, and have vision for the future development of your projects
  • experience in university-level teaching, including lecturing or similar presentations
  • demonstrated progress toward your own independent research program evidenced by original, high-quality, research, as evidenced by refereed publications in particular; a track record of external funding success is an advantage, especially at Level C. In accord with the international Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), journal impact factors will not be considered and should not be mentioned in your application
  • demonstrated leadership potential and the ability to motivate junior members of your team
  • evidence of developing capacity to contribute to governance, administration, and leadership in the higher education sector.
