About Us

We are an 8300 Mixed Enterprise family-owned and managed farm in Newdegate/Varley, Western Australia.

We are located 420 km southeast of Perth, 320 km northeast of Albany and 165 km from the coast of Hopetoun, WA. There are towns of Lake Grace, Newdegate Lake King and Varley which service our areas.

Our Family business is looking for an employee with livestock (sheep-specific) skills to join our team to take our innovative sheep and pasture enterprise to the next stage as our Livestock Manager. Your main responsibilities throughout the year will be to oversee the management of a 5000-6000 hd self-replacing modern merino flock, ewe lambs for retention and wether lambs for feedlotting. There is a 2000-3000 hd Feedlot Management operation for 3- 4 months of the year; Scanning, Lambing, Marking, Weaning, Classing, Ram Team management and Sale attendance along with 6mthly shearing will form your management role. Coordinating the livestock operation within the cropping plans and working collaboratively with existing staff will also be required. There will be the opportunity to operate cropping machinery during seeding and harvest, along with other non-sheep jobs. As an experienced stock person, you will also be able to manage casual/seasonal staff required to help you for livestock operations during busier times.

To succeed in this role, you must have good communication skills, accurate record-keeping skills to record onto established online management platforms, and the ability to work alone, safely and effectively with a team.

About the role

  • The Livestock Manager will work closely with the farm owners, Anna-Lisa and Craig, to continue to drive the productivity targets and goals set within the business.
  • With the Livestock Management Role will be the following activities -
  • Feedlot Management Jan - April Annually - Ensure animal welfare is paramount, support nutritional and animal welbeing requirements to the highest standard
  • Independently operate Machinery to deliver grain/hay, fencing construction & repairs, and movement of stock feeders and equipment.
  • Ram Team Management, oversee Ram health, shearing, health and maintenance, planning for purchases (alongside farm owners)
  • Pre Lambing Management - Carry out pasture and feed on-hand assessments, deliver supplementary grain and hay as required, and check and manage water points.
  • Lambing Management - daily stock checks and assessment of lambing ewes, intervene if required, administer animal health products, transport animals as needed.
  • Oversee Orphan Lamb management (fully automated) with support staff - ensure optimum health and well-being of livestock upheld.
  • Lamb Marking preparation and flock management before and after the contracted process.
  • Lamb Weaning - planning paddock allocation and carrying out weaning with support staff to wean lambs successfully.
  • Monitor Weaned lambs for health and well-being - intervene as needed.
  • 6thly Shearing - plan and prepare for shearing, manage livestock movements, and oversee the shearing process supported by casual staff and farm owners.
  • Fencing and Farm Improvements - ongoing overseeing, attention, and management are required in fencing, water management, sheep yards, and laneways. Work collaboratively with farm owners toward improved infrastructure, equipment and ease of management for livestock handling.
  • Working safely and within the quality and regulatory requirements for animal management, food and fibre production is also required

Ideal Qualities

  • The preferred candidate should have at least five years of sheep management experience and good mechanical skills.
  • Animal health & welfare knowledge.
  • Leadership and Staff management experience
  • Sound judgement & decision-making skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work alone safely
  • Computer/App literacy and experience in livestock data systems
  • Prior experience with and practical understanding of workplace health and safety requirements, systems and management
  • Driver’s license (C class minimum)

Remuneration and Location

  • The role offers an hourly rate structure (depending on experinece) plus superannuation.
  • Accomodation is included along with lunch and evening meals during harvest and seeding if operating machinery (value $7500)
  • With annual hours taken into consideration, wage amounts to approximately $75-$100,000 per annum, depending on experience and hours worked.
  • There is 5 weeks annual leave.
  • 12 week trial period
  • 40hr week minimum - longer hours during busier times
  • Accomodation available (shared at present but options for alternatives available)
  • Vehicle for personal use required
