Kinaltek is a technology company, working on the production of a range of high-value metallic alloy and composite powders from widely available and affordable starting materials. Most recently, this work has secured commercial interest and backing for its applications within the Energy Storage and EV industries, where incorporation of Kinaltek materials has shown substantial performance leaps. Our small but growing team consists of research scientists, engineers and tradesmen working on process development and commercialisation of these technologies.
*** Immediate start role in a growing company ***
About the role - Technical Officer:
Expanding our trades function, we are looking for another all-rounder Fitter/Machinist interested in stepping out from a traditional trades mould into a hybrid R&D role where their maintenance, fitting and machining skills will be applied directly to developing and maintaining a world-first physical process. The successful candidate will split their trades duties with being directly embedded into research laboratory and other everyday operational business activities of a growing start-up company. We are looking for a candidate who, whilst being a capable fitter/machinist, is also able to grow into an R&D role filled with design, prototyping and experimental science.
Duties:
- Provide mechanical and technical support to the scientific/engineering staff.
- Carry out reactive and proactive maintenance on established and developing pilot plant equipment.
- Assist with carrying out planned technical and experimental tasks in the lab – both under the direction of scientific staff as well as own initiative.
- Take responsibility for in-house general maintenance tasks.
- Prepare industrial drawings for mechanical parts to be manufactured by external providers. CAD/CAM experience is an advantage but not mandatory – if you can mark up basic technical drawings and communicate with third party machining vendors that is more essential.
- Play a key role in growing our safety culture, being proactive and championing best OH&S practices as the company grows from R&D to scale-up and production.
Key criteria:
- A trade qualification in mechanical/machining work.
- Experience of at least 5 years.
- Understanding of general Occupational Health and Safety requirements, including Risk Assessments, SWMS and correct use of PPE.
- Ability to carry out general tasks and have handyman skills are essential to the role – this is not a wholly fitting or machining role and all staff are deeply embedded in everyday experimentation.
- TIG Welding and fabrication ability are an advantage.
- General numerical literacy, computer skills and ability to prepare industrial drawings. Prior exposure to Autodesk products or other CAD packages would be advantageous.
- Ability to work with limited supervision.
- Understating of chemical processing hazards is an advantage.
- Prior experience with R&D projects (or prototyping) is an advantage.
- Must be comfortable with uncertainty, frequently changing scope, flexible duties and structure.
- Must have working rights in Australia
We offer a market-competitive salary that is commensurate with skills and qualifications.
