  • Lead a team to deliver CSP excellence across Rio Tinto’s Gladstone Operations
  • Build and sustain trusted relationships with host communities and Traditional Owners

Where we’re all welcome

We are committed to an inclusive environment where people feel comfortable to be themselves. We want our people to feel that all voices are heard, all cultures respected and that a variety of perspectives are not only welcome – they are essential to our success. We treat each other fairly and with dignity regardless of race, gender, nationality, ethnic origin, religion, age, sexual orientation, or anything else that makes us different.

At Rio Tinto, we particularly welcome and encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, women, the LGBTI+ community, mature workers, people with disabilities and people from different cultural backgrounds.

We acknowledge that all people are different and believe that our differences are our strength. The diversity of skills, life experiences and perspectives within our team enhances our way of working and our ability to achieve success together.

About the role

Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.

We are looking for an experienced Manager Communities & Social Performance (CSP) to lead a team of CSP practitioners across our Gladstone aluminium assets, including:

  • A refinery at Yarwun
  • A smelter at Boyne
  • A refinery at Queensland Aluminium Limited (QAL)
  • Growth projects related to the decarbonisation of Gladstone’s assets
  • Other growth projects in the region

The Gladstone area has a strong industrial history, and Rio Tinto has been operating there for over 55 years. Directly employing over 3,000 people from the region, our people and our business are part of the social fabric of the host community. We also purchase goods and services from over 370 local suppliers, and have a long history of social investment through our Here for Gladstone program.

This is a complex role, requiring strong people-management skills and excellent influencing capabilities with both internal and external stakeholders. You will work across multiple assets with competing priorities and need to quickly develop a presence amongst our Gladstone leadership teams. The CSP manager will develop long-term strategies to deliver CSP excellence in line with Rio Tinto’s CSP Standard (2022). The manager will provide leadership in building and maintaining meaningful relationships and partnerships both internally and externally. This role requires skills in effectively managing social risks, impacts and capability, and identifying social opportunities that can be leveraged through innovative initiatives.

Being one of Rio Tinto’s senior leaders means helping to run a company that drives human progress. Many of Gladstone’s growth initiatives support this objective, and this role will play a key part in driving these initiatives forward.

We offer competitive, performance-focused remuneration and a wide range of benefits to reward your contribution. With a global reach, the opportunities to develop are broad and exciting.

Reporting to the General Manager CSP Pacific Operations (PacOps), you will:

  • Lead, grow and develop a team of CSP professionals
  • Integrate the CSP team across multiple complex assets and drive performance
  • Lead the delivery of the PacOps integrated CSP Strategy in Gladstone – developing a CSP Plan for how this will translate in the Gladstone context, and the CSP initiatives that will be delivered to meet its objectives
  • Identify, negotiate, implement, and maintain agreements, commitments, and/or partnerships with external stakeholders to support the business and strengthen the communities where we operate.
  • Develop and maintain a knowledge base of host communities and utilise your expertise to deliver shared benefit in these communities.
  • Develop and maintain favourable relationships through strong engagement with the local community and stakeholders
  • Lead and ensure delivery of engagement strategies and communications plans
  • Facilitate relationships between asset leaders and external stakeholders.
  • Manage and mitigate social risk and opportunities through business activities and interactions with communities and stakeholders
  • Facilitate the resolution of complex CSP situations and challenges.
  • Strengthen the CSP capability of team members and business leaders in Gladstone’s assets.
  • Represent the business at community and industry forums in a manner aligned with Rio Tinto’s values.
  • Engage with the business on key technical CSP deliverables including responsible management of land and tenure, preservation of cultural heritage, supporting local participation and co-designing a positive long-term legacy for Gladstone with key stakeholders.
  • Ensure the activities of team members are aligned to maintaining compliance with legal and other commitments, including company policy and standards relating to CSP.

What you’ll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Strong skills and experience in leading and managing teams.
  • Experience in reforming teams to become high performing teams
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement, government relations, community relations or community development in a similar role (essential)
  • Influence & negotiation skillset
  • Demonstrated expertise in implementing projects to high CSP standards or similar
  • Experience managing complex multi-stakeholder plans and projects
  • Proven ability to build positive relationships, including building and leading a team
  • Strong data analysis and interpretation skills
  • Experience with risk identification and management
  • Familiarity with Gladstone and its unique socio-economic context (preferred)

What we offer

Be recognised for your contribution, your thinking and your hard work, and go home knowing you’ve helped the world progress.

We offer:

  • A work environment where safety is always the number one priority
  • A competitive salary package with annual cash incentive awards for eligible employees
  • Career development and education assistance to further your ambitions
  • Access top tier, family-friendly health and medical programs and pension plan
  • Wellbeing benefits
  • Generous Rio Tinto employee share program
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Ongoing individual wellbeing support for you and your family for personal and professional matters
  • A comprehensive leave policy that covers all moments that matter in life (vacation/annual, paid parental, etc.)

We have been mining for 150 years and operate with knowledge built up across generations and continents. Our purpose is finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs – striving for innovation and continuous improvement to produce materials with low emissions and to the right environmental, social and governance standards. Activities at BSL include manufacturing carbon anodes in the carbon plant, aluminium production (smelting) in reduction lines, and casting of molten material into aluminium products ready to ship. The smelter is connected via a conveyor belt to the Queensland Alumina Limited refinery for the supply of alumina.

BSL is committed to protecting the environment and ensuring safe work practices where people feel safe at work and care for each other.

Every Voice Matters

At Rio Tinto, we particularly welcome and encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, women, the LGBTI+ community, mature workers, people with disabilities and people from different cultural backgrounds.

We are committed to an inclusive environment where people feel comfortable to be themselves. We want our people to feel that all voices are heard, all cultures respected and that a variety of perspectives are not only welcome –they are essential to our success. We treat each other fairly and with dignity regardless of race, gender, nationality, ethnic origin, religion, age, sexual orientation or anything else that makes us different.

Please note, to be successfully considered for this role you must complete all pre-screening questions.
