Job description

The role:

  • Provide expert policy advice on Environmental Health and food safety practice issues, regulatory, professional and policy matters to the Director of Public Health, the Agency, other Government Agencies, Minister, Government, Local Government, Businesses, Universities, and the public.
  • Represent the Agency, the Chief Executive - Public Health Services, or the Director of Public Health across a range of forums at a State and National level including engaging in complex and sensitive negotiations encompassing a range of high-level issues that may affect the State.
  • Consult with experts in public health medicine, toxicology, epidemiology, veterinary health, environmental management, and other relevant fields.
  • Under the broad direction of the Environmental Health Director, exercise statutory functions and delegations assigned to the Manager - Environmental Health.   
  • Provide leadership and direction to professional and administrative staff ensuring a high quality, comprehensive services in accordance with the principles and goals of the Department and Public Health.

Details of Appointment

Permanent, full time, day worker position working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.

*notwithstanding hours may be negotiated with the successful applicant

  • Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time and part time vacancies.

Location: Hobart, Tasmania

Salary: $139,492 to $141,354 per annum. Our Employer 11% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Allied Health Professionals Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement No. 2 of 2022

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria:

  • Qualification approved by the Director of Public Health for appointment as an Environmental Health officer under the Public Health Act 1997 and an authorised officer under the Food Act 2003 (eg tertiary qualification/program of study approved by Director of Public Health)

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • At least 10 years’ experience in a senior Environmental Health Practitioner role in State or Local Government.
  • Current Driver’s Licence
  • Eligible for membership with Environmental Health Australia

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:

  1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
  1. crimes of violence
  2. sex related offences
  3. serious drug offences
  4. crimes involving dishonesty
  1. Identification check
  2. Disciplinary action in previous employment check.
