Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join Queensland’s leading Human Rights agency in a position of trust and empowerment where you will directly contribute to building a culture of Human Rights in Queensland, and specifically for First Nations peoples. Supported by a small direct team and with indirect supervision of a team of Liaison Officers, this role will work collaboratively to define, design and deliver strategic and operational initiatives that will enhance awareness and understanding of Human Rights, as well as making sure that the Queensland Human Rights Commission (the Commission) is accessible to First Nations communities.
This position will influence the Commission’s First Nations policy and lead the ongoing development of cultural capability within the Commission.

The Manager, First Nations Unit will have the following key responsibilities: * Lead the development, promotion and implementation of the Commission's First Nations Action Plan in line with the statutory functions of the Commission and strategic objectives.

  • Establish and manage the First Nations' Unit in line with its Terms of Reference; monitor, evaluate and report on effectiveness and achievements.
  • Provide authoritative policy advice and contribute to the Commission's legal and policy work as required, based on First Nations' priorities, risks and needs.
  • Provide leadership and expert, informed advice on Human Rights issues impacting on First Nations communities, as supported by meaningful data and analysis.
  • Formulate, design and advise on innovative ways to improve the Commission's service delivery model to meet the needs of First Nations communities.
  • Create and maintain strong working relationships with community leaders and stakeholders to identify and address risks and barriers to equality and Human Rights.
  • Provide leadership in the design, delivery and evaluation of education programs and public awareness campaigns to meet the needs of Queensland's Fist Nations communities.
  • Liaise and collaborate across the Commission and whole-of-government to identify opportunities to build cultural capability and strengthen responses to threats to the Human Rights of First Nations people.
  • Appropriately represent the Commission at external forums and committees, including the conduct of speaking engagements as an expert in First NationsHuman Rights.
  • Supervise up to four staff members and provide cultural support to First Nations Liaison Officers in collaboration with their direct managers and provide opportunities for networking, mentorship, coaching and development.
