The Role

Australian Astronomical Optics - Macquarie (AAO-MQ) is seeking a qualified Mechanical Engineer to take a lead role on various innovative projects as well as oversee their technical direction and design. They will work collaboratively with teams across AAO-MQ to resolve engineering and technical challenges, and ensure projects are delivered against their agreed timelines.

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Group Leader, you will:

  • Develop concepts, system and subsystem level mechanical designs and parts drawings for instrument projects
  • Produce documentation for project proposals, reviews, subsystem analysis and tests, and for instrument operation and maintenance manuals.
  • Perform structural, kinematic, vibration, and thermal analyses through FEA and other analytical techniques.
  • Develop alignment, assembly, and test plans for the verification and acceptance of mechanical and opto-mechanical components, sub-systems, and instruments
  • Provide mentoring, advice, and guidance to junior members of the team, and work collaboratively with other AAO teams to resolve engineering and technical challenges.
  • Develop technical specifications for procurements and evaluate the market for parts, products, assemble, test mechanical parts and components of instruments.


About You
You will have completed Masters or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a closely related discipline. You will have deep and broad experience as a specialist technical Mechanical Engineer with excellent skills in CAD design as well as mechanical drawing and have a passion in analysis for precision Mechanical Engineering. You will be experienced in opto-mechanics for scientific or technical instrumentation or very closely related fields. You are an excellent communicator with a proactive nature, flexible and you enjoy working individually or working as part of a larger team.

Essential

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering and extensive experience working in a relevant discipline
  • Experience in geometric design using CAD software, production of parts drawings for manufacture of precision mechanical components
  • Experience in structural, kinematic, vibration, and/or thermal analyses through FEA and other analytical techniques
  • Experience in assembly and test of mechanical parts and components
  • Demonstrated capacity and enthusiasm to work in collaborative teams, and to communicate effectively on technical matters and ancillary project attributes to peers and supporting stakeholders, including relevant documentation and record keeping.


Desirable

  • Proven track record in opto-mechanics for scientific or technical instrumentation
  • Knowledge of and/or training in systems engineering practises for technical projects
  • Experience in mentoring team members and developing high performing teams
  • Demonstrated capacity to engage professionally with clients, present and articulate design options, trade-off constraints and opportunities
