Terrific opportunity for a creative and tenacious Media and Public Affairs Professional to join an Independent Statutory Authority in the renewable energy sector.
This EL1 role will see you lead the management of day-to-day media relations and PR opportunities, including involvement in proactive and reactive media relations and announcements. This encompasses proactively engaging in media announcements for Agency initiatives, which involves drafting materials, collaborating with external stakeholders, managing media relationships, and refining story angles with prominent journalists. Additionally, the role involves reactive media engagement, including addressing inquiries, showcasing thought leadership, arranging interviews, and preparing interview outlines.
Reporting to the Director of Media and Public Affairs, and with oversight of an Advisor, Key duties will include:
- Execute media, thought leadership, and public affairs strategies
- Ensure coordinated communications within Corporate Affairs aligned with media announcements
- Cultivate relationships with internal business areas to identify media and thought leadership opportunities
- Assist the Director in managing relationships with the Minister's Office and Department, including media interactions
- Engage with external stakeholders in the energy sector for announcements
- Simplify complex terminology for media materials
- Identify target media audiences and foster relationships with key journalists
- Pitch opportunities to media outlets and refine story angles for maximum impact
- Develop thought leadership content and determine optimal outlets
- Generate content and media concepts supporting Agency's strategic objectives
- Identify and address potential media risks and contribute to issues briefs
- Contribute innovative ideas to Corporate Affairs content planning
- Lead and mentor direct report to enhance their performance and meet deadlines
- Coordinate media interviews for Agency spokespeople, preparing briefs and talking points
- Utilise media reporting and analytics to enhance metrics and increase visibility
- Respond to reactive media queries, coordinating responses with the APS 5 Advisor
Skills and Experience required:
We are seeking a skilled Communicator with proven experience in communications, Public Relations, or media, emphasising media relations within agency, corporate, NGO, or government sectors. Any prior experience in energy, environment, technology, politics or other industry sector translating information into accessible content will be highly regarded.
- Creative, tenacious, innovative, and quick-thinking with a commitment to delivering strong outcomes
- Strong communication, writing, and editing skills, capable of simplifying complex issues into accessible content
- Proven ability to generate content and news stories, unafraid to experiment and innovate with new approaches
- Extensive experience in managing media relations with national tier one outlets, as well as niche media markets
- Established media contacts and the ability to expand networks effectively
- Track record of creating impactful PR ideas to enhance topical awareness and reach
- Keen attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks
- Strong stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a team environment
- Experience in the energy sector is advantageous but not essential
- Australian citizenship
