About Melbourne Teaching Health Clinics

Melbourne Teaching Health Clinics (MTHC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Melbourne and provides world class clinical training opportunities for the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences students. It also provides patient access to high quality health care for members of the Victorian community, within a private practice setting. There are six clinical areas that are central to this service, and they include general practice, dentistry, eye care, hearing, speech and psychology.

About Shepparton Medical Centre

Shepparton Medical Centre (SMC) was established in 2010, the first purpose-built, multidisciplinary teaching clinic in Australia created to increase the quality and capacity of medical education in a rural setting.

Since its inception, SMC has been facilitating the wellbeing of our patients and students by focusing on patient-centred care and outstanding clinical education. We deliver approximately 40,000 services to patients each year and support the community in a number of ways including participating in Priority Primary Care Centres as well as providing allied health care and specialist care from the Centre.

The SMC is located in Shepparton, a vibrant, diverse community located approximately two hours north of Melbourne in the heart of the Goulburn Valley, the food bowl of Australia.  Shepparton’s central location, population growth and significant infrastructure Offers an enviable lifestyle with university options, premiere housing estates, and all the must have facilities.  Shepparton also has a vibrant and diverse culture, mild climate and high level of activity which makes Greater Shepparton an exciting place to be.

About the Role

Are you an exceptional Medical Director seeking a rewarding leadership opportunity? Melbourne Teaching Health Clinics invites applications for the prestigious role of leading our Shepparton Medical Centre (SMC). As the most senior position at SMC, you will play a pivotal role in providing unparalleled clinical and operational leadership to our dedicated team. The ideal incumbent will possess strong clinical and professional expertise, as well as have demonstrated skills in clinical leadership, managing innovative change and a passion for cultivating and mentoring people to reach their full potential.

The position will be responsible for ensuring patient care is paramount and that an effective clinical governance structure is in place.  As a key member of the Senior Management Team, the position will collaborate closely with both the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer to establish and deliver on strategies to enhance patient care, develop innovative care practices, support clinical education and grow the Centre by engaging with the key partners in the Shepparton region. The role also offers the unique opportunity to participate in teaching (if desired) within the University of Melbourne’s Department of Rural Health and will come with an appropriate University of Melbourne honorary appointment. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading all aspects of service delivery, operations, strategic development and partnership engagement
  • Taking charge of a high quality, teaching general practice with a high profile Priority Primary Care Centre to develop, improve and deliver on innovative patient care

  • Develop the next generation of the medical workforce by coordinating the clinical supervision of final year medical students, rural MD students and registrars 
About you

You are an experienced GP, passionate about delivering patient care in regional areas and able to lead a multidisciplinary team of nurses, GPs, allied health practitioners and administrators.

You are looking to make a difference in a high profile, innovative clinic that operates a general practice as well as a Priority Primary Care Centre.  You will be able to think laterally and be energised to implement change both clinically through innovative multidisciplinary team care models and operationally to set the clinic up to effectively deliver a broad range of patient services. 

Not just a GP, you are able to leverage your experience to oversee the SMC clinical supervision program, deliver clinical teaching through the University Department of Rural Health and be an integral part of the education of the next generation of GPs in the University of Melbourne’s medical program.

Key Selection Criteria 

  • A Vocational Registered GP with current AHPRA registration.
  • Demonstrated experience in medical leadership within a medical practice or acute health service.
  • Extensive leadership background with the ability to foster connection, mentor and manage diverse teams.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to negotiate and effectively represent the Shepparton Medical Centre to external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective and productive relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to successfully implement change to meet strategic objectives.
  • Demonstrated success in establishing new clinical services or operational projects.
  • Experience in the provision of general practice medical services.
  • Experience in assessment and diagnosis of a wide range of health problems.
  • Experience in providing clinical supervision to medical students.
  • Experience in clinical practice management and service accreditation and/or registration, and the planning and delivery of health promotion programs.
  • Experience in or demonstrated aptitude for contributing to the management of a medical practice in the context of staff management, support, and mentoring.
  • Excellent computer skills including all MS Office products.
