About the opportunity
A vacancy exists for an enthusiastic and experienced Medical Hospital Scientist in the Immunohistochemistry (IHC) section of the NSW Health Pathology Anatomical Pathology Laboratory, at Liverpool Hospital. The APLIV laboratory provides a full Anatomical Pathology service to several hospitals within the South West Sydney Local Health District including Liverpool, Fairfield, Campbelltown, Bankstown, Camden and Bowral hospitals.
This position is key to the continued provision of our Anatomical pathology services, and as such will required to work within a rotating roster with other scientific/technical staff. It is expected that the successful applicant will have extensive theoretical and practical experience in the IHC laboratory to include: Immunofluorescence (IF),General Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing, In situ Hybridization, and operation of automated IHC equipment.
It is expected that the applicant will also have extensive experience in all routine Histology duties such as: specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, special stains, FS, endoscopy transfers, non-complex cut-up (or willingness to learn).
Other laboratory duties including preparation of materials and the maintenance of equipment, quality assurance, training/supervision of other staff and procurement in line with established laboratory processes, procedures and protocols will also be undertaken.

What you'll be doing
Responsible for delivering a range of operational laboratory activities as mentioned previously, including the coordination and provisions of scientific and technical training and the ongoing review, development and quality management of laboratory practices to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement.

- Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution
- Demonstrated, extensive theoretical and practical experience in the IHC laboratory, to include : Immunofluorescence (IF),General Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing, In situ Hybridization, and operation of automated IHC equipment. Demonstrated extensive practical experience in routine Histology laboratory duties to include: specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, endoscopy transfers, special stains, FS and non-complex cut-up (or willingness to learn) and the use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Control Systems and computer programs such as Microsoft Office suite
- Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
- Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment while working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes and contribute to a range of diagnostic skills relevant to the laboratory
- Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
- Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements
- The ability and willingness to work on a variable roster 24/7 as well as ability to participate in the on call roster

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases
This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy Directive PD2023_022 Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases. All recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. All recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.
All NSW Health workers are required to have two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, as defined by NSW Health. Employees working in a clinical area or are required to attend clinical areas are considered category A. Category A positions are required to provide evidence of having received three doses of COVID-19 vaccine in accordance with the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (TGA) and meet the requirements of the Occupational Assessment Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy Directive. You will be required to provide a record of your COVID-19 vaccination status if successful.
Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
