MELBOURNE | PAEDIATRIC REGISTRAR | CONTRACT COMMENCING 2020

Our client, a major metropolitan healthcare network has an amazing opportunity for a Paediatric Registrar to join their team with an immediate start.

This leading metropolitan health service and major teaching and research hospital network has undergone significant growth and transformation in recent years.

THE POSITION

The Registrar’s performance is supervised and monitored by Department Specialists to ensure they are entrusted with responsibilities commensurate with their capabilities.

The Paediatric Registrar will work in an inpatient environment within the Children’s ward, Special Care Nursery (SCN), The Women’s Health Unit (WHU) and Emergency Department as well as attending deliveries and theatre when required.

The Registrar will also work across a wide variety of clinics on a 7-day rotating roster across all shifts, including night duty and weekends.

Under direction, the registrar reviews medical, developmental, and behavioural needs of patients and provides appropriate care and services to secure optimum health outcomes.

The Registrar also has a vital role in teaching and supporting Resident Medical Officers and Medical Students.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under direction, provide appropriate medical care to patients and assist more senior doctors in complex cases.
  • Build and expand personal skill levels to ensure that clients receive the best possible service reflecting up to date evidence based professional practice
  • Be aware of and work in accordance with organisational policies and procedures including occupational health and safety and relevant legislative requirements.
 

THE PAEDIATRIC DEPARTMENT

The Health Services paediatric activities include a 15-bed paediatric ward, a 15-cot special care nursery, an extensive paediatric and paediatric sub-specialty out-patients program, including child development and school-visiting services – over 20 different Paediatric Clinics.

The Paediatric service supports an increasingly busy maternity service, currently delivering over 3000 babies per year.

Paediatric trainees experience outstanding training in a supportive and educational environment.

There is also an outstanding education program which includes simulation, accredited courses, communication courses as well as journal club, case presentation, X-ray meeting, and visiting speakers.  The Department also has an excellent exam preparation program with for the RACP clinical exam.

THE SPECIAL CARE NURSERY (SCN)

The SCN is a 13-bed, Level 2 high dependency unit that provides care for babies requiring specialised care and observation.  Six consultant paediatricians care for the babies in the SCN.  Other SCN allied health professionals available include:

• lactation consultants

• paediatric physiotherapists

• speech pathologists

• occupational therapists

• social workers


THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The Emergency Department (ED) provides 24-hour emergency medical services and is one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the State with around 75,000 patient attendances per annum.

This purpose-built facility includes a separate resuscitation area with capacity for frequent management of medical emergencies in adults and children, major trauma and other life-threatening emergencies.

The Department provides resuscitation, stabilisation and initial treatment for all emergencies. It is designated by the State Medical Displan as one prepared to send out teams of appropriately trained staff to a disaster site.  The Department has senior medical staff comprising Emergency Physicians, Paediatricians, General Practitioners and Specialist Emergency Physicians in training.

The Department also has access to specialists in Intensive Care, Anaesthesia, Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Liaison Psychiatry, medical and surgical subspecialties at all times, as well as extended hours access to Allied Health professionals including a social worker and Community Psychiatric Services (CLIPS).

Emergency Medicine at this facility is accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) for Advanced Vocational Training and for ACEM Paediatric training requirements. The department has formal academic affiliation with the Faculty of Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash University.

The teaching centre works closely with universities and specialist training colleges to train the next generation of health professionals. With many doctors who are in the specialist training programs, under the supervision of a specialist taking part in procedures and operations. Doctors can be trained through to specialist level, meeting the requirements of many professional colleges (such as the College of Surgeons, the College of Physicians, the College of Anaesthetists, the College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and others).
