About the Authority

The Climate Change Authority is an independent statutory body established to provide expert, evidence-based advice to the Australian Government on climate change policy. The Authority has an exciting and growing work program ahead, including:

  • Advising on Australia's climate change targets and progress towards those targets.
  • Conducting reviews of the Emissions Reduction Fund, National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme and the Safeguard Mechanism, as well as other requested reviews; and
  • Undertaking climate change policy research.

WANTED: Policy advisors, analysts, project managers and communicators ready for the challenge of decarbonising Australia.

The Climate Change Authority is the Australian Government's climate policy think tank, charged with advising the Government on the next emissions reduction targets and policies to transform Australia to a resilient, prosperous, net zero nation.

Providing the right advice for the next targets will require deep policy thinking, quantitative and modelling skills, communication skills and project management smarts.

The new Analysis (aka The A Team) and Strategy Branches (aka The Strategists) are recruiting staff at APS5, APS6 and EL1 levels.

The new branch structures include the following teams:

Strategy Branch
  • Strategy, Policy and Projects Team.
  • Outreach and Engagement Team.
  • International and Markets Team.
  • Science and Adaptation Team.
  • Business Support Unit.
Analysis Branch
  • Modelling, Data Analysis, and Presentation Team.
  • Transport and Power Team.
  • Industry and Resources Team.
  • Agriculture, Land, and Waste Team.
About the roles

The Authority is recruiting for multiple positions at the EL1, APS6 and APS5 levels.

Assistant Managers (EL1) in the Climate Change Authority lead and manage a small team with responsibility for a range of functions related to Australia's emissions reduction targets, climate change policies and progress towards becoming a resilient, prosperous, net zero nation.

In this role you will also:
  • Lead research and analysis (generally quantitative for the Analysis Branch and qualitative for the Strategy Branch), including collecting, interpreting and evaluating evidence to provide accurate and relevant policy advice.
  • Produce high-quality written and/or graphical materials for a range of audiences, including the Authority's advice to the Government, Authority meeting papers, technical documentation, briefing, correspondence, consultation papers and web content.
  • Plan and undertake consultation with industry, government and community stakeholders.
  • Contribute high-level expertise to support strategic direction and planning relevant to your Section, Branch, and the Authority.
  • Contribute to management activities relevant to the team, including stakeholder management, quality assurance, scheduling, monitoring, evaluation, risk, issues management, project management, and reporting.
  • Undertake staff development, mentoring and performance evaluation.
  • Contribute to policy development and identifying opportunities for business process improvement.
Priority tasks differ between teams. For example, the Outreach and Engagement Team undertakes more consultation-related tasks and the Modelling Unit focuses more on analytical tasks.

Senior Advisors (APS6) in the Climate Change Authority have responsibility for and contribute to a range of functions related to Australia's emissions reduction targets, climate change policies and progress towards becoming a resilient, prosperous, net zero nation.

In this role you will also:
  • Lead research and analysis (generally quantitative for the Analysis Branch and qualitative for the Strategy Branch), including collecting, interpreting and evaluating evidence to provide accurate and relevant policy advice.

Eligibility and security clearance

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens. These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Staff and managers work together to balance the operating needs of the work unit with the needs of the individual. Options may include full time/part time working arrangements, working remotely, or other arrangements, as agreed by all parties.
