About the role
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced Natural Area Conservation Ecologist to join the Asset Management team at the City of Swan.
The successful candidate will oversee the Capital Works natural environment projects, prioritise multiple complex projects, prepare grant applications, coordinate condition assessments, facilitate the development of bushland and foreshore management plans and liaise with various internal and external stakeholders to ensure best practice management of Natural Area assets.
You will be required to have a strong appreciation for preservation and restoration of natural environment areas, as well as comprehensive knowledge of environmental classifications and processes, such as Category Controlled Wetlands, Declared Rare Flora, Dieback and Weed control mechanisms and Aboriginal Cultural Heritage requirements.
Key Accountabilities include, but are not limited to;
- Prepare 10-year Capital Works Natural Area Plans which consider renewal, upgrades and new projects for Natural Areas, as well as ‘whole of life’ asset costs.
- Lead regular condition assessments for Natural Areas, including weed and dieback mapping or as otherwise recommended by relevant legislation/best practice Natural Area management.
- Prepare project charters in line with the requirements of the City’s Capital Works Process and Asset Calendar cycle.
- Develop effective data collection processes and manage Natural Area databases and asset registers.
- Develop, implement and monitor short, medium and long-term bushland, foreshore and water quality management plans and programmes for the City’s reserves using information collected during condition assessments, as well as specialist conservation knowledge and skills.
- Liaise with community groups, Traditional Owners and government departments regarding environmental issues and support the development of alliances and partnerships to achieve environmentally sustainable outcomes.
- Manage consultants undertaking works on behalf of the City on Natural Area projects.
- Proactively seek and apply for external grant funding as required.
About you
The successful candidate will have the following:
- Tertiary qualification in Natural Area management and/or related science field and/or relevant experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of environmental processes, standards and technical requirements
- Experience in planning natural environment projects
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- A team member with a strong appreciation of safety, continuous improvement and good customer service
- Current Drivers Licence
- A satisfactory National Police Certificate is required
