Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position in Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. The position is primarily based at the Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital and supports the Mental Health Unit with support extended to community mental health teams within the district. The balance of inpatient and community work depends on the profile of consultants at the time. Applicants who expect to be eligible for Fellowship within 3 months and who have no more than one College-administered assessment to complete may be considered; if successful, the applicant will not be subsequently eligible to commence their appointment until after the relevant qualifications and requirements are formally completed. Successful applicants also participate in a District-wide after-hours roster.
This permanent position provides timely and need-adapted care to people presenting for specialist care within an acute mental health inpatient setting and community mental health settings. Successful applicants will contribute to team expertise across a range of therapeutic modalities and participate in key clinical decisions. As part of their non-clinical duties, the successful applicant is also invited to adopt a portfolio within the Service that supports quality and safety and scholarship in a relevant field. The Mental Health Service aims “To be a proactive and responsive person-centered service which provides integrated care to each consumer, in the context of their family, support people and community; primarily, working together with our communities to improve mental health, promote recovery and prevent mental illness.”
The Mountains and the Plains of the LHD spans the lands and waterways of the Darug, Gundungurra and Wiradjuri people, and includes metropolitan, rural and semi-rural communities, many of which are situated within World Heritage natural environments with access to excellent amenities and transport.

  • Possess or be eligible for: registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZP) or equivalent as provided for in the Health Services Act 1997, current NSW driver’s license. Demonstrated commitment to Continuing Professional Development and reflective practice.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in providing effective, high quality mental health services in a psychiatry setting; demonstrated commitment to person-centered, recovery oriented, family inclusive, trauma informed and need adapted principles of care.
  • Demonstrated ability to support and work in collaboratively interprofessional contexts that include lived-experience professionals; sound knowledge of psychiatry encompassing biological, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual domains. Expertise and experience relevant to the position.
  • Demonstrated high level verbal and written communication ability including capacity to communicate clearly, inclusively, and respectfully. Word processing skills necessary to complete expert documentation.
  • Demonstrated skill and commitment to the teaching and supervision of medical staff, non-medical colleagues, and students consistent with contemporary best practice; commitment to inter-professional learning.
  • Qualities, attitudes, and articulated values consistent with a senior medical practitioner providing mental health care to consumers across the age span and their social networks; and evidence of high ethical and professional standards.
  • Experience in or capacity for supporting quality improvement and clinical governance activities; and demonstrated commitment to high quality care provision in the public sector.
  • Familiarity with and support of basic, clinical, and applied research activities relevant to the needs of the Mental Health Service and its staff and the ability to draw on values and research concepts in the appraisal of evidence, guidelines, and quality improvement activities.
