Role Type: 12-month part time contract (0.5 FTE) Salary: $75,841 p.a (pro rata) + superannuation   Join Our Team as a Newborn Bloodspot Screening (NBS) Educator!

The opportunity:
 

Are you passionate about newborn health and education? We have an exciting opportunity for a part-time role within the NBS Laboratory funded by the Victorian Department of Health.

As an NBS Educator, you'll play a crucial role in our laboratory's mission. Here's what you'll be doing:
 

  • Providing information, education, and support to clinicians, health professionals, and families.
  • Assisting with NBS policy development and implementation.
  • Liaising with external hospitals, parents, and health professionals to facilitate inquiries.
  • Supporting ongoing quality assurance projects and data collection/reporting.
  • Collaborating with the laboratory team including pathologists, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.

Our laboratory is at the forefront of newborn screening, testing for conditions such as congenital hypothyroidism, cystic fibrosis, metabolic disorders, and more recently spinal muscular atrophy and severe combined immunodeficiency.

Your responsibilities include:
 

  • Be familiar with overall NBS testing processes and follow-up protocols sufficient to educate stakeholders and parents
  • Educate midwives and other health professionals on: NBS sample collection, obtaining high quality samples and obtaining informed consent; timing of collection and problems of transfusion and prematurity; information delivery to parents at the time of collection; and insufficient samples / contaminated mislabelled samples
  • Develop educational resources for on-line and face-to-face delivery

What we need from you:
 

  • Cert IV Training and Assessment or equivalent (or obtained in first six months of employment)
  • Ability to travel to metropolitan and regional maternity services to deliver education
  • Previous experience in delivering ongoing education to health professionals
  • Practical knowledge of neonatal blood collection and positive patient identification
