Job description

Northern Hub - Director
Fixed term, full time appointment (12-month term)
Senior Contract
Casuarina Campus

Provide leadership for an initiative that will help transform the drought resilience of farmers, traditional owners and communities in the NT and WA.

About the Position
The Northern Western Australia and Northern Territory Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub (Northern Hub) is one of eight national Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hubs created as an initiative of the Future Drought Fund.

Established by a consortium of regional partners committed to building the resilience and sustainable prosperity of rural industries and communities across the region, the core consortium partners include industry bodies (Kimberley Pilbara Cattlemen’s Association, Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association, Northern Territory Farmers Association) as well as NRM organisations (Territory NRM, WA Rangelands NRM), Regional Development Australia and government agencies (WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and the NT Department of Industry Tourism and Trade).

The Hub is structured as unincorporated joint venture, with Charles Darwin University holding the head agreement with the Australian Government. The Hub will administer the grant at the direction of an independently chaired governing board, representing consortium partners.

Reporting directly to the independent Chair of the governing board and being guided by the board and governance committees, the Northern Hub - Director role is an exciting opportunity to provide leadership in a nationally significant program. Servicing businesses and communities across an area of approximately 3 million km2, Hub engagement and extension activities will be delivered through the regional delivery centres of consortium partners. These delivery centres will include Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs, Carnarvon, Broome and Kununurra.

About You
To be successful, you will require:

  • An excellent understanding of Northern WA and Northern Territory Agriculture and a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with diverse range of stakeholders including industries, government, universities, research and extension organisations and Indigenous groups.
  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing strategy, including the prioritisation of projects and activities.
  • The ability to implement an effective engagement strategy and build and maintain strong partner relationships, operational capabilities and funding streams.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience in operational management through the development and management of human, financial and physical resources.
  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to engage various stakeholders and effectively negotiate and gain results for all parties.
  • The drive to challenge the “status quo” and actively seek substantive, innovative solutions that will be implemented though strong partner engagement, transparency and project management.
  • Excellent personal communication skills and a proven capacity to engage stakeholders and to translate complex information into simple and culturally appropriate messaging.
  • Proven capacity to write and report concisely, and manage time effectively to meet tight deadlines
  • Understanding and sensitivity to work effectively in a complex cross-cultural environment.
