*$10,000 Department of Health scholarships are available to enable eligible candidates to cover the costs of program participation, such as living expenses, while completing the unpaid program. Conditions Apply: Participants must be Australian or New Zealand Citizen, an Australian permanent resident or hold an Australian permanent humanitarian visa and commit to seeking employment to be eligible for the scholarship. About the Role
Eastern Health is offering registered and enrolled nurses and midwives, with condition-free, NMBA registration the opportunity to re-enter the nursing workforce. Our Nurse and Midwife Refresher Program, provides a program of education, clinical teaching, ward-based learning and support. The Refresher Program will provide an opportunity for you to gain experience and confidence in the hospital setting. The program includes access to the Learning & Teaching team, professional development study days, skill acquisition via simulation based learning and clinical placement on a hospital ward.
Midwifery participants must also complete Australian College of Midwives online Refresher Program. Refresher Course (midwives.org.au)
The Refresher Program will be delivered at the following Eastern Health sites:
- Angliss Hospital (Upper Ferntree Gully)
- Box Hill Hospital (Box Hill)
- Maroondah Hospital (Ringwood)
- Peter James Centre (East Burwood)
- Wantirna Health (Wantirna)
- Healesville Hospital (Healesville)

Key Dates
The Refresher program commences with two compulsory orientation days.
Cohort 1 (April Cohort): Tuesday 23rd April and Wednesday 24th April 2024 - location to be confirmed.
Cohort 2 (May Cohort): Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd May 2024 - location to be confirmed.
Completed over seven weeks, the program is tailored to meet the individual learning needs of a participant.
Successful candidates must be able to commit to a minimum of three shifts per week, with two of these shifts on consecutive days.
The Refresher Program is not a paid position. Participants are offered ongoing employment at Eastern Health, on successful completion of the Refresher program.
About You
You are dedicated, empathetic and adaptable. You are interested in the complex and varied patient presentations cared for in the hospital setting. To be eligible for the Refresher Program you must have:
- Current nursing / midwifery registration with AHPRA (condition free)
- Professional indemnity insurance
- The commitment to complete the program of study and clinical placement hours
- A willingness to undergo pre-employment screening, including reference checks and police check
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- A high degree of accountability and a supportive and engaging style
This program is not suitable for newly qualified nurses or midwives. Applicants who have not completed a graduate nurse / midwife program, or who cannot demonstrate a work history as a registered nurse / midwife in Australia are, unfortunately, unable to be considered.
