Nurse Unit Manager - Theatres
A unique and exciting opportunity has become available at Mater Private Hospital Townsville Hyde Park for an experienced Nurse Unit Manager. This role will be managing our 4 Theatres and Day Surgery Unit in our Hyde Park campus. We are seeking an individual with extensive experience in a leadership role within Operating Theatres.
The Nurse Unit Manager is responsible for providing exceptional clinical and professional leadership to the clinical area that drive patient centred outcomes and innovation across the department within Perioperative Services. This successful applicant will be offered Permanent Full Time employment.
Salary range: $69.34 - $74.56 per hour (Nurse Manager 3) plus superannuation and salary packaging up to $15,900 annually
About Mater Hospital Townsville - Hyde Park Campus
offers a diverse range of medical services tailored to meet the healthcare needs of the community. Among its offerings are day surgical procedures covering various specialties such as dental, maxillofacial surgery, gynaecology, plastics/reconstructive surgery, urology, minor general surgery and more. We also provide renal dialysis services, with a dedicated team of nephrologists, vascular surgeons, registered nurses, dietitians, and allied health professionals working together to support patients with kidney failure. The hospital specializes in all aspects of haemodialysis, including new starts, chronic maintenance, and acute dialysis.
Furthermore, Mater Mothers' Private Townsville, part of the hospital, offers comprehensive maternity services, including fully equipped birth suites, private single rooms, rooms with double-beds for partners or support persons, and special care nursery cots, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for expectant mothers and their newborns. We also provide a variety of Women’s services our specialists treat a wide spectrum of gynaecological conditions, with Sub -Specialists in Gynaecological Cancer, Subfertility and Urogynaecology.
What you’ll be doing
As the leader of this team, you will provide exceptional management and be responsible for the clinical, resource management, education, research and material accountabilities within this area. Additionally, in conjunction with the medical leadership of the service, you will ensure the provision of best practice, quality and safety aspects of patient care.
Other duties and responsibilities include:
- Caring for and leading a team of professionals
- Communication and coordination of patient care across operation theatre teams
- Engagement with stakeholders in other departments to ensure the highest quality patient care, that services are efficient, that patient safety is optimized, and to resolve barriers to patient flow.
- Team management, including performance management and compliance with Human Resources processes
- Delivery of work against relevant timeframes

As an experienced leader you will drive innovation in your field; using evidence-based research to suggest new ways of doing things and take a positive and adaptive approach to embedding change.
Your broad understanding of the health sector and your ability to work collaboratively provides you with a foundation to grow your business in line with the strategic vision of the organisation.
Other skills and responsibilities include:
- Extensive experience in Operating Theatres with sound clinical expertise
- Current AHPRA Nursing registration and Advanced Life Support certification
- Ability to demonstrate strong capability in leading both the clinical and commercial aspects of a tertiary service
- High level communication skills within a multidisciplinary environment
- Demonstrated competence in cost centre management
- Willingness to role model and promote the Mater values
