Occupational Health, Safety & Training Superintendent - Sibanye-Stillwater Australia
Sibanye-Stillwater Australia (SSWA), a subsidiary of Sibanye-Stillwater Limited, is a leading mining, tailings management, and economic rehabilitation company. Our operations include the Century Mine and Karumba Port in Queensland, featuring the largest tailings remining and processing operation in Australia. Additionally, we are progressing with the Mt Lyell Copper Mine redevelopment project in Tasmania, focusing on sustainable underground operations.
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Occupational Health, Safety & Training (OHS&T) Superintendent to join our team at Mt Lyell Mine. This pivotal role is responsible for monitoring and implementing company policies, programs, and initiatives related to OHS&T systems, while providing crucial support to the management team.
This position will be offered as a Residential role out of Mt Lyell on a 5/2 roster (10 hours per day).
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the OHS&T departments, including budget management, coordination, planning, and implementation of programs with other departments and stakeholders.
- Manage the Emergency Services/OHS&T Coordinators, providing direction and guidance as needed.
- Project manage the development and review of formal risk assessments focused on the 12 elements of the Health, Safety & Training Management System.
- Analyse safety statistics to identify gaps, develop appropriate corrective actions, and establish standards and procedures.
- Provide direction and guidance to employees and on-site contractors on OHS&T issues, ensuring compliance with legislation and the site Safety Management System.
- Promote a safety excellence culture and demonstrate leadership in safe behaviours and activities.
- Audit compliance with relevant safety legislation and undertake corrective action to ensure compliance.
- Support adherence to all SSWA values, systems, and procedures by all personnel and contractors, including conducting safety audits, promoting a positive reporting culture, and facilitating Risk Management processes.
- Maintain oversight and maintenance of the electronic health & safety management system, ensuring incident reports, investigations, corrective actions, and other safety actions are up to date and reported in a timely manner.
General Administration:
- Review and maintain documentation and records, including the risk register, in compliance with site standards and legislative requirements.
- Organise safety training as required, maintain the safety and training matrix and database, and report on safety statistics and compliance.
- Maintain inventory and ordering, inclusive of raising and receipting as directed, and manage departmental budgets.
- Ensure timely, effective, and professional communication of matters relating to the role and site, and coordinate tagging and reporting of defective equipment to ensure compliance and identification of resource deficiencies or requirements.
Skills:
- Intermediate level of computer literacy in the Microsoft suite of programs, Scenario Advantage, Damstra Workforce.
- Strong team ethic with the ability to self-manage and direct.
- Highly developed verbal, written communication skills coupled with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to educate and mentor others.
- Proven ability to operate according to quality systems, legislation, company policy, and procedures.
- Ability to educate for and reinforce site safety systems.
- Proven experience in the delivery of on-site training.
- A drive and passion for safe work practices with the ability to work unsupervised and to plan your own work.
- Effective communication with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
Knowledge:
- Relevant Safety, Training, Transport, Mine, and Emergency Legislation, Australian Standards, Code of Practices, Guidance Notes.
Experience:
The ideal candidate should have significant experience in Workplace Health and Safety Management, Training and Assessment, and Open Cut or Underground Mining operations. Additionally, prior experience in a site-based safety and/or Emergency Response role, with a focus on underground operations, is essential.
Education, Qualifications, Tickets, Licences:
- Minimum Diploma level qualification in OHS&T.
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110/40116).
- Current Australian Driver’s Licence (manual, heavy rigid).
- Advanced First Aid or equivalent.
- Cert III Mines Rescue or equivalent Emergency Response qualification or minimum of 3 years experience.
- Drug and Alcohol testing certification.
