We are seeking an Oceans Observation Quality Specialist with solid experience in oceanography and Ocean Observations.
This role is part of the Ocean Dynamics team within the Oceans group portfolio of observing projects and is a central role in providing high quality observations and ensuring CSIRO data meet best international standards.
You will participate in collection, quality assurance and quality control of in-situ Ocean Observations from planning and deployment through to data quality control and processing and dataset creation and delivery to international data repositories.
This role will require you to have solid practical physical oceanography knowledge and demonstrated experience with seagoing instrumentation, quality checks and processing large and diverse oceanographic data sets. Typical instruments we deploy measure ocean temperature, salinity, pressure and currents. The data come from a range of different instruments including Research Vessel CTDs and towed profiling instruments, autonomous vehicles like gliders, moored instrumentation and underway sensors, including ADCP and XBTs.
You will have the opportunity to participate in our essential Ocean Observations program.
Your duties will include:
Synthesise domain-specific knowledge of physical oceanography, instrumentation, and customer/user needs to undertake quality control and processing of oceanographic data collected from national programs such as IMOS.
Utilise programming skills, oceanographic domain-specific expertise, and understanding of user needs for oceanographic observations. Adapt and/or develop original experimental methods/equipment/software/concepts/ ideas in support of existing and further research.
Participate in field campaigns at sea, including research vessels, as directed.
Maintain an existing suite of software – written in MATLAB and Python –and contribute to the development of the next generation of software to future-proof our program.
Develop observations evaluation tools for CSIRO to take advantage of new and emerging technologies, such as autonomous observing platforms, or novel oceanographic instruments.
Engage with domestic and international communities through forums to ensure that CSIROS’s standards comply with and contribute to international requirements and best practice.
Contribute to research activities and publications that compliment strategic priorities, and that use relevant oceanographic data.
Be a point of contact for CSIRO ocean sensors and autonomous observations developers to maintain a bridge between technology and the science outcome.
Participate in work which is highly involved because of the unique or unusual features and complications, requiring the design & development of original technologies, and/or the development of original experimental or observational techniques and insightful interpretation of data.
Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, research team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO’s scientific objectives. To this end, communicate effectively with all staff and collaborators. Address problems promptly and in a constructive manner.
Location: Hobart, TAS preferred.
Salary: AU$ $105,806 – AU$$114,500 per annum (pro-rata for part-time) plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:
Essential
Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.
Relevant qualifications and/or equivalent work experience within physical oceanography or relevant field.
Experience in designing, acquiring, and working with Ocean Observations. Analysis and quality control of those data.
Experience managing oceanographic data and metadata to deliver to public ocean data portals. And experience working with common data formats in oceanography.
Experience coding and scripting in Python and/or Matlab, including code versioning. Working on a Linux environment and scientific computing systems.
Background knowledge of and experience with seagoing instrumentation.
Desirable
Understanding of the role of the ocean in the climate system.
Sea-going experience.
Positive experience working in teams.
Experience delivering public data product
