Your Opportunity

As the Operational Support Coach (casual basis) you will provide a range of support to students with a disability in a vocational education and training environment.  

  • The aim of this position is to foster empowerment and independence in students with a disability undertaking studies through the enhancement of their existing study skills and/or abilities. 
  • You will be required to maintain administration policy and procedures relating to the Student Services and Support business unit.

This position reports to the Team Leader, Student Support.

We are seeking Expressions of Interest for Operation Support Coaches (casual basis) based primarily at the Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Gympie, Nambour and Mooloolaba campuses however you may be required to perform work at other TAFE Queensland campuses. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the success of transformation and cultural change through promoting and modelling the established values of Commerciality, Teamwork, Innovation and Accountability.
  • Liaise with the Team Leader, Student Support in order to confidentially discuss the specific needs of individuals receiving disability support, including scheduling of support.
  • Manage the delegated caseload of identified students in an efficient and flexible manner to maximise service delivery.
  • Maintain records in the appropriate format regarding students with a disability.
  • Provide professional administrative/learning support across multi-functioning teams within the region as required.
  • Undertake research and development on matters relating to business functions.
  • Ensure day-to-day activities align with business operations.
  • Contribute to improvement in business processes and practices.

Provide in-class support for people with a disability, such as:

  • Note taking, reading, examination/assessment assistance/support,
  • Assistance in using computers including general office software packages,
  • Assist with accessing resources and materials,
  • Assist the student to communicate with teachers/tutors,
  • Observing and identifying student difficulties and/or changing support needs and report to the teacher (in classroom situations).
  •  Assist with course specific tasks, i.e. kitchen work in the hospitality area,
  • Support students with a disability individually or in small groups.

Provide outside class support for people with a disability, such as:

  • Resource preparation and adaptation of materials,
  • Assessment assistance, i.e. format, presentation, proofreading,
  • Assessment review, i.e. ensuring assessment criteria are understood and addressed,
  • Assistance in using computers including general office software packages,
  • Identification of and access to facilities and services.
  • Observing and identifying student difficulties and/or changing support needs and report to the teacher (where required).
  • Support students with a disability individually or in small groups,
  • Liaise with educational staff (i.e. teachers), parents/guardians, employers, representatives from other involved agencies or professionals to determine the context of assessment requirements in order to assist students with a disability.

How you will be assessed

The ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities:

  • Ability to support the organisations business objectives through demonstrated knowledge of the requirements and application of reasonable adjustment in a complex work environment. Experience in supporting people with a disability in an educational environment to achieve outcomes for the business unit.
  • Ability to build and sustain positive relationships with team members and clients and actively participate in team work and activities including self-management and participative decision-making skills and the ability to accept, promote and manage change.
  • Ability to commit energy and drive to see that goals are achieved in a timely manner utilising a sound level of computing skills, including use of general software packages.
  • Demonstrated high level of communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills, including written communication skills, tact, discretion and confidentiality, to develop strong working relationships and networks with internal and external clients.
  • Displays the initiative, attitude and ability to thrive within a dynamic, challenging and changing environment.

Highly Desirable Qualifications

  • Educational Support Qualification (Certificate III in Education Support, Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, similar or higher level study)
  • Disability Work Qualifications (Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability), similar or higher level study)
