We're looking for a Principal Backend Software Engineer to join our team, who will technically guide the delivery of a group of engineers (5-8) and help us to achieve our goals.
You will be fully remote, but will need to align with Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) or New Zealand Standard Time (NZST) for maximum overlap with your colleagues.
You will report to a Senior Engineering Manager and be a part of Shard Management, which owns and maintains the capacity of our Jira and Confluence Cloud products. We make sure that there is enough capacity for new users to sign-up and for existing users to have a good experience.
You will help solve interesting problems like:
Scale (i.e. Atlassian has a lot of Jira and Confluence Cloud customers and a lot of infrastructure)
Expansion (i.e. how do we provide capacity management beyond Jira and Confluence Cloud)
Data Residency (i.e. how can we support the customers need to control where their data is)
Efficiency (i.e. how can we do more with less, minimising costs, both human and financial)

You will:
Determine the plan-of-attack on large projects, considering customer impact and technical trade-offs
Solve complex architecture challenges and apply architectural standards
Grow and multiply those around you using your experience and judgement, even fellow senior engineers
Lead quality activities like code reviews, documentation and bug fixing, especially in high-risk areas
Partner across Engineering teams to take on company-wide programs
Your background:
10+ years experience in a mixture of hands-on development and technology leadership roles
Demonstrated history of successful end-to-end ownership and delivery of technology capabilities
Expertise with one or more prominent languages such as Java, Python, Kotlin, Go, or Scala. Kotlin is ideal
Understanding of SaaS, PaaS and IaaS with hands-on experience with public cloud offerings (e.g., AWS preferred)
Experience in Developer Experience or Developer Productivity
Experience in CI (Continuous Integration) and CD (Continuous Deployment)
