Job description

• Ongoing (35 hrs. per week)
• Parramatta with flexible working arrangements available
• Clerk Grade 3/4, base salary ($79,032 - $86,539), plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading
Your role
The primary responsibility of the Civil Team is to:
• Manage civil claims against DCJ, including child abuse claims involving Youth Justice and out-of-home care, and other civil claims involving Housing, Courts Services, Corrective Services NSW, disability, and other personal injury claims.
• Manage claims against Government figures and bodies including the Attorney General, the State of NSW, Court and Tribunals and the NSW Sheriff’s office.
• Provide advice and liaise with internal and external stakeholders in relation to matters within the Attorney General’s portfolio, including constitutional matters, complex charitable trust matters and policy and law reform issues.
• Manage proceedings brought under the Family Law (Child Abduction Convention) Regulations 1986
• Provide advice and liaising with internal stakeholders in relation to matters under the Hague Convention of Jurisdiction, Applicable Law, Enforcement and Cooperation in Respect of Parental Responsibility and Measures for the Protection of Children
What you’ll do
In this role you will be supporting Solicitors and senior staff in the management of the team’s responsibilities. As a Paralegal, you will be responsible for providing legal, clerical, and administrative support in relation to a wide range of litigated and un-litigated claims against the State of NSW, predominantly child abuse claims. The work is high-volume and involves reading sensitive and challenging material.
The work of the team is interesting, and you will be given development and training to support you to succeed in your role. We are committed to taking a trauma-informed approach to the work we do, given that our work touches on the most vulnerable. If you want to make a difference, work on complex legal issues which are unique to this team – this is the place to be.
You do not need a law degree or to be studying law to apply for this role.
What we’re looking for
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to evaluate issues and possible solutions.
• Demonstrated high level interpersonal skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to deal with all levels of staff in a confident professional manner.
• Demonstrated high level computer literacy skills in a range of products and applications, including Microsoft products, internet applications.
Essential requirements of the role
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in records management.
• Intermediate knowledge of Content Manager or other document management system and/or records management system.
• Current and valid Working with Children Check Clearance in accordance with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012.
