Patient Safety Capability Lead
Full Time Permanent role

$130,000 + superannuation

How you will make an impact:
Cabrini is committed to delivering safe, effective, high quality healthcare services in partnership with patients and their families. The Patient Safety Capability Lead will build expertise within the Quality and Patient Safety team and the wider organisation for clinical incident reviews extending to serious adverse Patient Safety event (SAPSE) reviews in line with Duty of Candour legislation.

Working in collaboration with other members of the Patient Safety, Patient Liaison, Patient Experience and Quality Improvement teams, the patient Safety Capability Lead will contribute to the development of a culture of safety, quality and clinical risk management across Cabrini by improving systems and processes to monitor, follow up and reduce the incidents of adverse events and complaints.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working with the Quality and Patient Safety team to review and implement incident management procedures
  • Providing coaching and mentoring to Quality and Patient Safety Partners for contemporary incident review practices
  • Conducting incident/mortality/hospital acquired complication case reviews and follow up system or process issues
  • Promoting and supporting the implementation and management of the Statutory Duty of Candour (SDC)/Open Disclosure (OD) and the sentinel event program
  • Regularly review reported incidents or feedback including the identification of possible trends that require improvement
  • Managing the review of adverse Patient Safety events (APSE) including serious adverse Patient Safety (SAPSE)/sentinel events and maintaining a register


What you will bring to the role:
To be successful in the role, you will have a commitment to ongoing personal and professional development and also have the following:

  • Relevant degree in a health-related discipline
  • At least 5 years' post graduate clinical nursing or health professional experience in the acute care setting
  • Proven experience leading clinical incident investigations and complex complaint reviews
  • Broad understanding of SDC including SAPSE and sentinel event reviews and legislative requirements
  • Knowledge of clinical incident and quality management processes, frameworks and tools
  • Experience managing staff and building team capability
  • An understanding of the RiskMan incident reporting system desirable
  • Knowledge of quality improvement principles and processes
  • Understanding of legislative and accreditation requirements for acute health
