Job description

About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for recent graduates or those in early stages of a career in museum collections, archives, library and information services.  The Patricia Begg Internship is offered two days per week for a 6-month period to work with the Collections team at Arts Centre Melbourne.

Arts Centre Melbourne is the proud custodian of the Australian Performing Arts Collection (APAC), which is dedicated to the collection, preservation and interpretation of Australia’s circus, dance, music, opera and theatre heritage.

Collecting began in the late 1970s and two early major acquisitions were the J. C. Williamson Theatre Archive and the Dame Nellie Melba Collection. Today, the collection holds over 800,000 objects, including major acquisitions from Kylie Minogue, Nick Cave, Barry Humphries, Bell Shakespeare and The Australian Ballet.

Primarily under the supervision of the Research Coordinator, the successful applicant will be work across a range of specialist collection areas including the Research Service, Curatorial and Collections Management. Tasks will include booking and supervising research appointments, library stocktake, assisting in preparation of new acquisitions, assisting in deinstallation or installation of objects in displays, collections sorting, database records improvement and editing.  

The internship is designed to give practical experience across a number of professional areas who work with specialist collections. It is aimed at gradates of Museum Studies, Curatorial Studies, Library and Information Services, Archival Science or similar.

This internship is offered through the generosity of Mr Christopher Begg.

Part-Time fixed-term position (0.4 FTE). Band 1.2 $51,263.00 p.a. pro rata plus superannuation.

Your Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary degree in a relevant area in one or more of the following disciplines: Museum Studies, Librarianship and/or Information Management, Archives.
  • Well-developed verbal, interpersonal and written skills and capacity to collaborate with team members and clients
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team-setting to deliver projects, to manage and prioritise activities as a team to meet project timelines
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, plus understanding of current technology, operating systems and applications
  • The ability to learn new systems such as the Collections EMU database
  • Problem solving skills and attention to detail

The Arts Centre Melbourne Collections business unit sits within the Performing Arts pillar and is responsible for delivering a breadth and range of exhibitions that meet ACM’s curatorial framework objectives. The collections objectives are:

  • To be Australia’s leading museum of performing arts and create content and exhibitions of national significance.
  • To demonstrate excellence in the care, development, preservation, documentation, and display of the Performing Arts Collection.
  • To provide our audiences with meaningful experiences through dynamic exhibitions and public programmes, and innovative digital engagement.
  • To recognise and celebrate our diverse communities and artists and celebrate their role in the visual and performing arts.
  • To support contemporary practitioners through active collecting, exhibiting, and commissioning of new work.
