The Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation (KAC) is a relatively new Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC), which is currently expanding its workforce to accommodate new and exciting roles to support the Kariyarra People in managing their native title rights and interests. About the Kariyarra People
The Kariyarra People mainly live in the towns of Port and South Hedland, as well as neighbouring towns and communities in the Pilbara and Kimberley region including Roebourne, Karratha and Broome in the north-west of Western Australia. Kariyarra country is bound by Ngarla country to the northeast, Nyamal to the east, Palyku to the southeast, Banjima to the south and Ngarluma to the west.
The KAC is the PBC which holds native title in trust for the Kariyarra People, who are the native title holders of the land and waters covering approximately 17,354 sq km of Australia.
The Kariyarra Determination Area is home to places of special significance to the Kariyarra People, including ceremonial and mythological sites, petroglyphs, archaeological and historic sites of significance as well as other topographic features including permanent pools, major river and estuarine systems such as the Yule and Turner Rivers and natural resources.
The Role
The Payroll Officer reports to and supports the Finance Officer and is required to process the corporations finance requirements including payroll and general finance administration.
Key responsibilities and duties:
The primary objective of this position is to:
- Facilitate the accurate and timely processing of KAC payroll for heritage surveys and monitors, rangers, Directors and all KAC staff.
- Ensuring payroll data for all employees across all areas of the Corporation is kept up to date and accurate.
Other responsibilities include:
PAYROLL MANAGEMENT
- Process and manage payroll for a diverse workforce, including full-time, part-time, and casual employees.
- Experience processing and reconciliation of payroll and superannuation
- Collect and process timesheets in accordance with KAC policy, awards, and employee contracts; and
- Reviewing, preparing, and processing payroll from source data for the Finance Officer to review with strict deadlines.
- Familiar with multiple pay runs within a period and be able to process with short notice.
- Ensure accurate and timely calculation of wages, deductions, PAYG Withholding, superannuation and other statutory requirements.
- Maintain employee payroll records and handle any payroll-related queries or issues.
- Keep track of employee leave entitlements and usage.
- Stay updated on relevant payroll legislation, tax laws, and regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency in using payroll and accounting software Xero and MS Office Suite.
- Ensuring all payroll transactions are processed accurately and efficiently.
- Process reimbursements for expenses.
- Collecting, calculating, and entering data in order to maintain and update payroll information.
- Reconcile salary packaging accounts and liaise with the external provider.
- Compiling summaries of earnings, taxes, deductions, leave etc and supporting the Finance Officer to report on this.
- Complying with relevant awards and legislation.
- End of financial year payroll processing. Including the balancing and production of payment
- Summaries through STP.
- Determining payroll liabilities by calculating employee federal and state income, social security taxes, employer's social security, unemployment, and workers compensation payments.
- Resolving payroll discrepancies.
- Maintaining payroll operations by following policies and procedures.
- Assisting the Finance Officer with month-end reporting.
- Any other duties as directed by the line manager or executive team.
FINANCIAL RECORD KEEPING AND REPORTING
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date payroll and accounting records.
- Support the annual audit process.
COMPLIANCE DOCUMENTATION
- Adhere to relevant policies, procedures, and regulations related to payroll.
- Ensure compliance with GST and BAS requirements.
- Maintain proper documentation and filing systems for payroll and accounting records.
- Participate in external audits as required.
Other duties include:
- Managing records and receipts.
- Reconciling daily, monthly, and yearly transactions;
- Providing customer service to members and service providers; and
- Supporting general administrative duties across the office as directed by the Finance Officer.
Selection Criteria
Essential:
- Qualifications and/or experience in Finance, Bookkeeping and/or a related discipline;
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a payroll processing role;
- Ability to work in a busy environment and manage conflicting demands;
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy;
- Good data entry skills;
- High level organisational skills and ability to consistently follow-through on tasks;
- Ability to react calmly and effectively under pressure;
- Work as a member of a team with a shared vision;
- Experience in use of computer software such as Microsoft Office, Xero, internet, and email;
- A current Western Australia Driver’s Licence; and
- High level interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive and productive relationships with members and stakeholders.
Desirable:
- Experience working with Aboriginal organisations and people.
Qualifications and experience required/to be maintained:
- A current WA C Class Driver’s Licence; and
- Provide a National Police Check;

This part time role has flexible days and hours. The role will be based in South Hedland. A generous salary package including salary sacrifice, and 8 weeks annual leave pa pro rata will be negotiated for the right person.
