Located on Gadigal and Bidjigal land (Randwick NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. Emphasising a devoted focus to into suicide prevention, digital mental health, a workplace mental health, we undertake a unique ‘translational’ research approach that allows us to turn our world-class findings into new treatments, prevention strategies, clinical services, educational programs, and e-health products.We join the dots by connecting research answers, expert knowledge, and the voices of lived experience to deliver solutions that impact and boost the health care system for patients and practitioners alike. The Role

This Research Associate / Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for supporting Associate Professor O’Dea in research activities that are part of a short-term research contract in the field of digital mental health. This role will enable the successful applicant the opportunity to develop their research skills and expertise in digital mental health research.

The team has been tasked with developing a new framework to define the informativeness of clinical trials in the field of mental health. This project offers the opportunity for both quantitative and qualitative research. The successful applicant will assist with a range of research activities within this project including conducting literature reviews, ethics applications, study design, recruitment, data analysis, preparation of manuscripts, and dissemination materials and reports. The role reports directly to Associate Professor Bridianne O’Dea at the Black Dog Institute, and has no direct reports.

Duties & Responsibilities

Research
  • Undertake research under the guidance of a supervisor and contribute to a variety of ongoing research activities, including conducting literature reviews, ethics applications, study design, recruitment, data analysis, preparation of manuscripts, dissemination materials and reports.
  • Provide a high level of research project management to the supervisor and project team.
  • Undertake recruitment, data collection and maintenance activities, including database management.
  • Conduct data analysis and interpretation, in consultation with a statistician.
  • Ensure compliance is carried out with all relevant research ethics and other University policies and procedures.
  • Ensure timely dissemination of research outcomes through website publishing and use of other social media platforms.
2. Stakeholder Communication
  • Maintain relationships and have clear open communication with the wider research team, other areas of the organisation and key stakeholder groups.
  • Collaborate with researchers and stakeholders associated with the project and research group and participate in meetings and discussions as required.

Selection Criteria

Essential Criteria
  1. A PhD in mental health, psychology, public health, or a related field.
  2. Demonstrated track record in academic research in mental health or related field
  3. Outstanding written communication skills, with a demonstrated capability of writing for a diverse range of audiences, including writing reports, manuscripts, and grant applications.
  4. Previous experience in analysing and interpreting research data using relevant software packages.
  5. Excellent interpersonal and team skills, with the ability to develop and build positive relationships.
  6. An ability to work both in a team and independently, with a high level of flexibility and initiative with minimal supervision.
  7. Strong organisational skills with proven ability to meet deadlines, demonstrate effective time management, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  8. An understanding of and commitment to BDI’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
Desirable Criteria
  1. Prior experience in digital mental health
  2. Experience conducting or analysing Delphi Consensus Studies
  3. Track record of working with those with lived experience of mental illness
