Job description

Why Work With Us?

People need to get to work, home and everywhere in between and businesses rely on our roads. With a rich history dating back to 1926 and exciting future ahead, Main Roads Western Australia is the WA State Government agency responsible for managing the State's road network safely, connecting people and places. Main Roads is not just about roads. It’s about people.

The Opportunity

This is a 50D position and it is a genuine occupational requirement that the candidate appointed to the role is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. As such, only Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people are invited to apply for this position.

Based in Perth and backed by an invested and friendly team, you will play a vital role in developing and managing important relationships with local Aboriginal communities, stakeholders and businesses. In this role you will be trusted and supported.

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Principal Advisor for Aboriginal Engagement to lead our efforts in building strong, mutually beneficial partnerships with Aboriginal communities across Western Australia. This role is pivotal in ensuring our projects uphold cultural integrity, comply with regulatory requirements, and deliver positive social impact.

Key deliverables for this role are:

  • Maximise Aboriginal business and employment outcomes on the current and future pipeline of regional infrastructure projects across the Transport portfolio.
  • Develop effective Aboriginal participation strategies for regional infrastructure projects.
  • Coordinate regional staff to manage and monitor the implementation of Aboriginal participation strategies, plans and programs.
  • Participate in leadership activities, including risk management and business planning.
  • Provide training and mentoring oversight to regional Aboriginal Stakeholder Engagement Advisors.
  • Manage review of Transport Portfolio procurement processes for maximising Aboriginal business engagement.
  • Manage the facilitation of professional assistance to Aboriginal businesses in the preparation and submission of tenders for Transport Portfolio contracts.
  • Manage delivery of presentations, influence and negotiate outcomes for Aboriginal business providers in a sensitive manner and awareness of their cultural norms.
  • Build and enhance professional working relationships with relevant State and Federal Government agencies and government bodies that provide education, training, employment and small business development assistance to Aboriginal people with a regional focus.
  • Managing employee behaviour, performance and development.

About You

To be successful you will need proven experience in a similar role with a strong track record of successful Aboriginal engagement and community relations. You will have comprehensive understanding of Aboriginal cultures, protocols, and socio-economic issues.

Our customers are important to us, hence your natural ability to develop positive, proactive, and professional working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders will be critical to your success in the role.

Additional Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel to Aboriginal communities in remote parts of Western Australia.
  • Demonstrated commitment to reconciliation and promoting Aboriginal empowerment and cultural preservation.

This is an excellent opportunity for a results driven person to develop their career by joining an innovative team within our organisation. Our environment encourages people to improve business practices and actively contribute to the strategic direction of Main Roads.

What We Offer

At Main Roads, you can have a challenging, flexible, and rewarding career that takes you exactly where you want to go with an organisation that supports a healthy work-life balance to help with what is important to you.

In addition to our competitive salary and 11% superannuation, some of the benefits of working with Main Roads include:

  • Attractive leave provisions
  • Flexible working arrangements
