To support our ongoing growth, we are seeking a Principal Ecologist based in our Brisbane office.
This position will report to the Queensland Ecology Manager and will play a key role in further developing Umwelt's profile for ecological projects across QLD. This includes identifying, winning, leading, managing, and completing a wide range of ecological projects, and taking ownership of all aspects of project delivery to provide a fully integrated outcome in a manner that maintains and enhances Umwelt's reputation. Key to the role will be your comprehensive and applied understanding of biodiversity offset requirements.
You will support and lead ecological assessments, further developing your skills in:
- Combining with the existing terrestrial ecology team to assess and characterise project impacts and offset requirements.
- Delivering technical ecological assessment reports, including offset liability assessments, offset management strategies and offset area management plans.
- Developing habitat criteria and offset scoring methodologies for implementation in the field as part of baseline condition survey or monitoring.
- Building relationships with the Umwelt national team, as well stakeholders and clients while actively pursuing new business opportunities.
- Mentoring junior staff and assisting with their professional development (senior role).
We are looking for a Principal Ecologist who has the following qualifications and attributes:
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field with 10+ years' relevant experience.
- Substantial ecological experience in one or multiple of the following sectors: infrastructure, defence, resources and extractive industry, or commercial development.
- Considerable consulting experience and/or a combination of consulting and client/regulator side ecology experience.
- Demonstrated experience as lead consultant for the application of relevant Queensland biodiversity survey and assessment requirements.
- Experience leading ecology surveys, offset assessments, and related reporting components.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with a range of stakeholders including peers, clients, and government agencies.
- Ability to work in a professional team as well as autonomously.
- Highly motivated with a strong team commitment.
- Willingness to support the development and implementation of the growth strategy for the ecology workstream in Queensland.
- Ability to prepare successful large tender/proposal documents.
