The Opportunity:

We are excited to announce an excellent opportunity for a Principal Ecologistto join our team in Melbourne. Reporting directly to the Ecology and Environmental Team Lead, you will play a pivotal role in providing ecological leadership and expertise to a diverse range of projects, with a focus on transport, maritime, water, and the built environment sectors. As a technical authority in your field, you will offer invaluable insights, advice, and direction, collaborating seamlessly with cross-functional teams to achieve exemplary project outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Spearhead environmental initiatives independently or under the guidance of project managers, contributing to the development of pivotal documents such as Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), and Environmental Management Plans (EMP).
  • Conceptualize, coordinate, and execute targeted flora and fauna surveys to inform project development and decision-making processes.
  • Provide advanced technical training to junior professionals in ecological survey methodologies, encompassing both desktop and field assessments.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of vegetation quality and fauna habitat to inform project planning and implementation strategies.
  • Assume authorship of reports or report sections and undertake rigorous technical reviews of colleagues' work to ensure accuracy and adherence to best practices.
  • Formulate strategic recommendations aimed at minimizing and mitigating environmental impacts arising from project activities.
  • Remain abreast of developments in local, state, and federal ecological and environmental legislation and guidelines, ensuring compliance and integration into project workflows.
  • Engage in consultations with external stakeholders, including productive interactions with local and state government regulatory bodies.

Additional Project Management Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the preparation of bids, effectively plan project scopes, and proficiently manage resources to successfully deliver projects within specified parameters.
  • Play a key role in identifying and pursuing new business opportunities, including the development of proposals, budgets, and project plans.
  • Cultivate and manage client relationships and stakeholder engagements, with potential oversight of small projects or work packages within larger project frameworks.

Who You Are:

You are a seasoned and driven Ecology professional, adept at thriving within a dynamic, multidisciplinary consulting environment. You recognize the significance of fostering professional connections and nurturing robust relationships within both the organization and the broader environmental sector.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field (especially environmental/natural sciences).
  • Demonstrable work experience in ecology and environmental management.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License.
  • Eligibility for membership in a recognized professional association.
  • Proficiency in working autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team setting.
  • Extensive technical expertise as an ecologist or environmental scientist, with a minimum of 5 years' experience, preferably spanning 6-10 years.
