About the role
Based in Melbourne or Brisbane and reporting to the Electrical Engineering Manager, the Principal Electrical Engineer is responsible for leading the development of electrical balance of plant (EBOP) design and providing technical accountability across the electrical team in the field of Electrical Engineering. Involvement in the project lifecycle ranges from early development (feasibility and connection assessment) and detailed design through to construction and finally support to operations teams.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct network connection feasibility assessments and design studies.
- Lead value engineering and safety workshops.
- Develop electrical balance of plant designs.
- Coordinate with network operators for connection requirements.
- Lead concept and preliminary design for primary electrical systems.
- Review external consultant outputs for compliance.
- Manage technical compliance and design reviews.
- Develop contract specifications and scopes of work.
- Support project delivery teams through construction phases.
- Provide input on design changes and commissioning works.
- Provide technical advice on system failures and upgrades.
- Communicate with regulatory bodies.
- Offer professional engineering advice.
- Facilitate decision-making using assessment techniques.
- Develop tender documents and maintain relationships.
- Complete cost-optimized designs and feasibility studies.
- Identify project risks and provide engineering solutions.
- Mentor team members.
- Provide technical leadership in grid connection design.
- Ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
- Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- 10+ years in a technical role in the power generation, transmission or distribution industries, including experience in the primary electrical design and implementation of substations and underground cable systems.
- Strong understanding and ability to apply Australian standards including AS2067, AS3000, AS3008, AS3013, AS7000, AS1768 and others as required.
- Experience producing engineering specifications and drawings.
- Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary design and construction management team.
- Strong technical report and specification writing skills.
- Chartered Status, NER & RPEQ (highly desirable).
- Experience in the NER grid connection process for renewable generator projects (highly desirable)
- Experience with the primary electrical design of grid connections for renewable energy projects. (highly desirable)
