About Us

The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is a jurisdiction within the Court Services Victoria statutory authority, and has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state.

The Court determines in excess of 300,000 cases per annum at 51 venues, equating to approximately 90 per cent of all cases that come before Victorian courts each year. The Court aims to be an innovative, accessible and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.

About the Role

The role of Principal Lawyer is to support the Director of Legal Policy in the provision of accurate and timely legal advice across MCV. This will include advice to support legal policy, process and good governance to Heads of the respective Divisions, Supervising Magistrates, Magistrates, and the Chambers of the Chief Magistrate.

The Principal Lawyer will participate in, or advise, steering committees and other internal groups to identify and respond to legal and policy issues of broad organisational and strategic importance. The role will also have responsibility for identifying legal issues that require escalation and co-ordinating a broad-based policy response.

The Principal Lawyer manages a medium-sized team of lawyers, operational staff and administrators.

About You

Advanced proficiency in the delivery of well-reasoned and insightful legal analysis and opinions on complex and technical legal matters.

Demonstrated people management and leadership capability, including recent experience in developing, supporting and motivating a team of legal professionals in order to foster a cooperative and supportive team environment.

Significant experience in private and/or government legal practice with expertise in drafting complex legal advice, legal research and analysis and preparation and implementation of administrative, legal and compliance policies and procedures. Admission to practice law in Victoria and a current unrestricted practising certificate.
