SCHOOL PROFILE

Berwick Primary School is in the outer southeast of Melbourne.  Originally established in 1857, the school relocated to its current site in 2003 to accommodate population growth.  
Berwick Primary School is an inclusive school where we work to develop students who value and are committed to the school's vision: `Learning is a journey where, along the way we commit to excellence and the development of principled, compassionate, lifelong learners who demonstrate intercultural understanding and respect'. Berwick Primary School has a current enrolment of 941 students in 39 classes.
Our current staffing profile (effective full-time) includes 54.2 teachers and 19.4 education support staff who provide support to both the teaching staff and students. This support covers Administration, Learning Support, Library, Integration, Facilities, Sick Bay, and Out of School Hours Care.  The school's leadership team consists of 1 principal, 2 assistant principals, 1 business manager, 3 leading teachers, 3 learning specialists and a school psychologist. 
The school's socio-economic profile, based on families¿ occupations and education, is considered in the low band which represents high socio-economic advantage. The Student Family Occupation and Education (SFOE) is 0.2120 with a Location Index of 0.13.  We have four Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the school, and there 464 students who speak another language and learn English as an additional language.  

We provide students with a caring and supportive environment that encourages effort to achieve academic goals as well as developing the intellectual, personal, emotional, and social skills required to live, learn, and work in a rapidly globalising world. Our students are empowered to develop a learner profile that has the skills and attitudes that will meet their future needs. The physical resources of the school provide for flexible learning and enhance our ability to provide a wide range of school and extracurricular programs. Student learning is planned for, using the Victorian Curriculum with the International Baccalaureate's Primary Years Programme as the framework. Our curriculum reflects our vision and values and is personalised. It is transdisciplinary and inquiry based. Literacy and Numeracy are focus areas of this challenging program that is designed to meet the learning needs of all students. The school has specialist programs in Visual Art, Music, Physical Education, Spanish and PYP.  The school has a 1:1 iPad program in years 3-6, class sets of iPads in all other areas and a class set of notebook computers support learning.

Role

The role of the principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department and the school community.


At the same time, the principal, as executive officer of the school council, must ensure that adequate and appropriate advice is provided to the council on educational and other matters, that the decisions of the council are implemented and that adequate support and resources are provided for the conduct of council meetings.

Responsibilities

The principal is accountable for the overall management and development of the school within statewide guidelines and Government policies. A clear set of accountabilities, which distinguish their work from other members of the Teaching Service and the education community are set out in detail in the contract of employment.

The core accountabilities of all principals are to:

  • ensure the delivery of a comprehensive education program to all students
  • be executive officer of the school council.
  • establish and manage financial systems in accordance with the Department and school council requirements.
  • represent the Department in the school and the local community.
  • implement decisions of the school council.
  • contribute to system-wide activities, including policy and strategic planning and development.
  • manage and integrate the resources available to the school.
  • appropriately involve staff, students and the community in the development, implementation and review of school policies, programs and operations.
  • report to the Department, school community, parents and students on the achievements of the school and of individual students as appropriate.
Who May Apply

Appropriately qualified individuals currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.

VIT LANTITE

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.

VAPA Requirement

To be eligible for appointment as a principal a person must either already be a Principal or have met the Victorian Aspiring Principal Assessment (VAPA) requirement as follows:

  • For principal positions advertised between 1 August 2021 and 31 December 2021 a person will be required to have registered to undertake the VAPA before being appointed to a principal position.
  • For principal positions advertised on or after from 1 January 2022 a person must have completed the VAPA and be provided with a statement of readiness before they can be appointed to a principal position.
