About the Role


Reporting to the Head of Safety – Group Safety, this role’s purpose is to provide technical expertise in the strategic management of safety related issues, provisions and initiatives across the organisation.  You will contribute to the development of the strategic direction, and lead tactical programs of work to deliver strategic objectives, for Safety across BHP’s global portfolio of Assets. 

The role requires a deep technical expert, providing critical input to the business in setting the strategy for BHP from a global perspective. You will develop and deploy standards, processes and initiatives through indirect leadership of the safety discipline.  

This is a great opportunity to join the team and provide valuable input into the development of strategy and improvement of a safety framework that enables BHP to deliver on the Charter Value of Sustainability and deliver excellent HSE performance.

This is a full time position, available to be offered in Perth, Brisbane or Adelaide with some travel and flexible working options being available. The opportunity requires you to provide leadership, coaching, strategic direction and expert support on BHP safety management systems and processes relating to our global portfolio.

You will be a key member in a team of dedicated safety professionals in this complex, diverse and rewarding setting.

You will be required to:

  • Provide technical expertise on the company safety framework, including the setting of the global safety strategy, forward focused public safety targets and BHP scorecards.
  • Identify BHP-wide fatality risk strategies to improve the safety framework and verify effectiveness in partnership with HSS leadership and Independent Audit and Assurance teams.
  • Develop and implement minimum global requirements (including guidance) and maintaining the annual review cycle as the Process Owner for BHP.
  • Lead global strategic safety projects and implementation, including improvement to current Field leadership and event management processes.
  • Identify and monitor safety practices and emerging trends (internal and external) and interpret these in relation to the safety framework effectiveness.
  • Provide technical advice to the Sustainability Committee of the BHP Board, Executive Leadership Team, and wider BHP leadership on strategic safety issues that may impact BHP.
  • Manage and coordinate relationships with peer companies, key industry associations, non-government organisations and research organisations.

About You


You will be a self-motivated professional with excellent leadership, communication and engagement skills. You will have a solid record of accomplishment of achieving results through influence, coaching and mentoring. 

To be successful in the role, you will also have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Health and Safety, Risk Management or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to influence at multiple levels in safety.
  • Previous experience in a role with an international, multi-cultural scope.
  • Technical knowledge of Vehicular, Gravitational or Machine energy. 
  • Coaching and mentoring skills with a genuine desire to help people, achieve solid outcomes and support continuous improvement.
  • Previous exposure to the mining and minerals processing industries is preferable.
  • Leadership role experience. 
  • Ability to Lead change with proven experience in applying organisational change management strategies.
